I might consider the special offer on ViaCAD Pro but need to know how many installations would be allowed.

Reason being that I have ....

A) One computer next to my CNC machine which is not connected to the Net. I often do minor changes to design and Gcode there. Machine is in the same building but not close to my office

B) one computer at my office where I do about 80% of the work

C) home computer where I do about 15% of my work (I prefer working to watching TV)

D) a laptop where I do the 5% balance of the work

So what am I allowed to do?

The ViaCAD license only allows for one install. The Shark License allows for multiple installs, but only one copy running at a time.

Tim , Thanks for info. I can fully understand the need to protect intellectual property and although I can't make an alternative suggestion, this 'per seat' license can eventually become the death of a good program.

The reason being that a) computers are inexpensive hence an individual can have several and b) cloud storage for data is cheap too.

I have several desktop computers at my personal disposal plus a laptop and a notebook.

For data storage I use Amazon S3 a well as SugarSync which allows me to keep on working on a project no matter where I am.

If I were limited to 1 computer per program it would severely limit my productivity and for ONE user to have to buy 6 licenses (in my case) is not a realistic proposition.

Dongles are not solution. I have 2 programs with dongles but stopped using them because when you need them you probably have left them on an other computer. I know I am not the only one avoiding programs with dongles.

Maybe instead of a computer-specific installation a cloud based 'folder-specific' installation might do it? Don't know if that's workable.

By the way, I purchased ViaCAD 2/3D V6 back in 2009, used it for a while then had to re-install Windows but never re-installed VC again. At the end of March this year I remembered actually liking the program and I thought of re-installing it again, sent off an email to customer care with copy of original order confirmation but haven't heard since....

Yup I understand completely. I had the "only one copy running at a time" type license when I owned the software. It took many discussions to get this license for Shark. However, Encore decided to use their "standard" license for ViaCAD despite my best efforts. Their standard license is the same as their other 90+ software products. I'm trying now to get them to do a subscription program which would include the Shark license.

Thanks Tim....will contact Todd shortly.

Maybe the people at Evo Soft should combine their brain power to think outside the traditional box and find an alternative. Whoever comes up first with a workable solution, will catch other CAD, CAM (or any other '1-seat') software vendors with their pants round their ankles :D
