While you can choose to make an object shown in low resolution it seems it still requires a lot of calculations. I currently work on a "scene" where I have several objects that need to be visible and part of simple manipulations but otherwise don't take part. Just having these objects visible in the scene slow down the work incredibly.

My suggestion is that you can "hide" the original object and have a really fast rendering representation visible in it's place. Currently I export as a very coarse stl file and import it to the file to replace the original object. Speeds up things enormously.
