I mentioned this several times over the past years :
Exporting part of a file includes all the empty layers.
This looks messy, is time consuming to clean, and can be a big confidentiality issue : I have sometimes different layers for different customers and I don't want to show them.

See attached exported file (using "select only") :
- 2 elements
- 43 layers...
File Attachment(s):
Bug angle dim.sfx (9kb) downloaded 5 time(s).

HI jl

Yes the export selected only does exports empty layers, you can use the file compact (new in version 7) to remove all empty layers with a couple of clicks to save you time.

At first when i began using layers in VC 2D/3D back in (what, 2008?) i lamented having to remove empty layers one-by-one. Then, i realized that keeping them was a major time saver for some models where i user the empty layers as a launchpad to more editing of the file.

As a hybrid option, it would be useful to be able to select which layers to keep on expor and which to export as empty. Is that possible, and maybe i've overlooked it?

For importing content into a skeletal file, it might be nice if the layers were pre-matched in a way similar to Lotus Approach or FileMakerPro (of the old days) where a dialog window showed all fields in a table (akin to layers) in the source and all matching or non-name-matching fields in the target. The user could then remap regardless of field name.

Initially, it is automatic, but the user can step in before the import begins and uncheck certain layer down to one layer.

This is my "work around".

I make a copy of the file, then I DELETE all the layers I do not want to export.

using
ViaCAD 6, 2D, Mac OS.
