I take a large file : ie 130 MB
I delete all the layers and all elements except one solid.
Also remove the links...
After saving ---> it is still around 110 Mb !

Now, if I copy the remaining solid, paste in a new file and save ---> 10 Mb !!

It must be the dust, shaken off when I copy the solid...

Hello JL

When you saved the file and it was 110Mb did you just do a save or save as? Do you have Save Display List checked under Preferences:Filing?

What size is the component when exported as an ACIS .SAT file?

Hi Nick,
Your questions are making sense...
For the 110 Mb file I "saved as" before deleting, and simple "save" after doing that.

Now if I do another "save as" the file drops down to 43 Mb.

- Another "save as" without display list ---> 4.7 Mb !

- Size of a SAT export : 9.2 Mb.

Opening the files on my MacBookPro :
- the 110 Mb file takes 98 sec (with display list)
- the 43 Mb file takes 45 sec (with display list)
- the 4.7 Mb file takes 78 sec (without display list)

Are my answers making sense ?

To push it further :
I open the 110Mb file and delete EVERYTHING and save.
The result is a 68Mb file containing 0 element...

Well, not exactly 0 element : in fact it is "0*"
The "*" is very heavy...

The result without the display list is 28kb...

A 68 Mb file displaying nothing might be called a trash...

A slow opening trash !

Hello JL

Thought that might be the case, the display list can get quite bloated over time.

Another variable which can dramatically effect file size is the resolution, for example a model saved as superfine can be reduced in size by over 70% by just saving as course.

Thanks Nick,

I have hundreds of files over 100 Mb because I'm used to "save as" variants of complex files ("display list" default being on) ...
Now, reopening each one and saving without display list will take me days.

Big files are so slow to handle, even on dual quad-core MacPro...

Don't you think the code should wipe it out automatically from time to time ?

Hello JL

My advise would be to just uncheck Save Display Lists in Preferences as this will dramatically reduce file sizes. It shouldn't have too much impact on your use of the software either as originally it was put in there so that slower processor computers wouldn't have to keep calculating display list when files were loaded. Of course it's a trade off between smaller file size and faster opening time.

Rather than the system arbitrarily deciding when to clear history, display lists, etc I'd rather have the option available to the end user. However, when components and geometry are deleted we really ought to delete the associated history and portion of the display list which pertains to them when the file is saved.

Tim is this a possibility to reduce file sizes by automatically removing redundant data?

I appreciate this thread, but I was wondering if we could glean some recommendations from it (as it is a little over my head). I am frequently dealing with large files and in working on them end up seeing a variety of "misbehaviors. I export an acis sat file and re-import to end up with an easier to use, stable file. Much is lost in this process however.

I would appreciate recommendations (in addition to uncheck display list, which I have done) to keep lean files that have as much history as possible.
