This afternoon I experienced several bus errors while using SharkFX 5.5.
These were not the kind of bus that is commonly used for mass transit.
The STEP files are between 50-100MB. SharkFX could import after a while (10-15 minutes) but then after picking a few parts within the file I started to see several bus error warning boxes, and it took clicking outside of the Apps window (onto the desktop) the be able to see the error dialog box. After clicking the OK button, SharkFX disappeared. Performance was sluggish and inconsistent.
My intuition tells me this is a Memory error in Mac OS X and SharkFX for Mac OS X.
Hopefully, Snow Leopard will make it possible to use more of the RAM I have in my computer soon. ANd I really hope that Shark is ready then too! There seems to be a problem too when trying to re-open these imported parts after they have been saved out as SharkFX. They seem to be damaged and not possible to open or import. : (
Anyway, SharkFX 6 with 64bit support would be really nice to be using right now.

Tim and Team,
When is the 64bit version of SharkFX available?
My rendering software is choking on the Imported OBJ files that SharkFX is struggling to produce. The rendering software is also 32bit, but will soon upgrade to the 64bit version.
Just so that you all know I am dealing with files greater than 1 GB.
Thanks!

I am opening a STEP file from another CAD program.
It is 50.3 MB.
The time to import is about 11 minutes.
I save the imported file as a SFX file.
Then I can't open the SFX file, actually it is because SharkFX decides to crash (repeatable).
There is another program open that is using OpenGL, might this be a problem too?
I don't think this is normal. At least I hope not.

I often have this problem with big STEP files from ProE. My work around is to export to SAT and re-import later. If the Shark file crashes when re-opening the at least I have got the SAT file.

I don't what it is that going via SAT is fixing/moving though. It is odd because the Shark file will work fine until it is closed then tried to be re-opened.

Thanks Nick.
I'll try saving out as a SAT file as a work-around.
I think it is a memory issue, though. Limit of 32bits probably.

With STEP files there is a bunch of processing of data. Since SAT is our native format, there is no processing.

If you think you are running out of memory, turn on the Activity Monitor and watch the memory for the app. If it gets to around 2.4GB, you are on the edge of running out of memory.

Hi Tim,

Would you like to see 3.99GB memory usage? I have a screenshot to share. ;-)
Ok, joking aside, I'll try the SAT route next time. I will try it tonight.
I was using my old work-flow with STEP since the surface quality is retained, even though it was taking more and more time to translate CAD.
I appreciate the advice.
