How does one lock a pic and orient a model to it? (#4641)

I cannot for the life of me figure this out. I like a photo of a ship. I want to orient my 3D model by end points of the bow (pointy end) and stern (back end), and then longitudinally adjust it so i can visually compare them by overlay/underlay toggling. But, everything I only rotates the whole view, not just the part. I do not want to change the angle of the image, either, although now that I think of, that may be an option...

ZLC. Can't you just enable the Gripper and move/scale the part to your heart's content - or do I misunderstand? Martin.

I think that that is what i tried, but the imported image kept rotating with the ship. I will try again.

Some sucess. But, it would be easier if it were possible to set up on the image andmon te model some 4 corresponding actual or apparent intersections, then tell the app whether to orient the photo to the model or the model to the photo.

paste your image into layer (say layer5), add some layout lines with intersections/end points that you want the model to snap to. Bring these lines out into the z plane. lock layer5. Place a copy of your model into new layer (say layer 6). Start with the center of the bow, or center of stern and move to one of the layer 5 layouts (this is why the layout lines have to be off the z=0 plane. rotate model setting base point at the end you declared datum in the last step. Then scale, again your datum point is the same. *If you hide the picture layer sometimes it will not show up again. Cad programs like vectors and dislike pictures, this is why you move the model, not the picture. Other option which looks better is export model to jpg/pic and then open in photoshop or gimp. new layer with your comparison picture. gimp and photoshop have transparency per layer settings that make comparison easier, but no layout/snap to options. Hope this helps.

I learned a lot from your reply Memphis. Brilliant, I dare say.

Raster graphic can be selected and manipulated by selecting the edge. Once selected all the normal translation tools can be used.

Thanks! I will keep a note of this. It has got me wondering now whether this might be an ideal scenario for the various navigation balls and joystick tools. It is making me wonder, too, about seeing if the Gripper might be useful, say, in the rotation feature. I may -- draw datum or reference lines of the ship's perspective then turn off the image, or export it for later re-import (to guard against the possiblity of it not wanting to reappear, or maybe use the external refs feature on the image?) -- lock the reference lines -- select the ship geometry -- Gripper-manipulate it to the approximate perspective/view angles I think I was tired and frustrated when I attempted and failed. With a few days away from the matter, I think I am seeing your advice and thinking it can be useful in several ways. Thanks!
