difference between vector and distance (#5099)

When I have a solid I sometimes want to cut out a cylindrical core. I make a circle on the surface and use the cut-out tool. I understand using "distance" for the coring. How is using "vector" different?

The vector options let you define a cutout path that is not just perpendicular to the object you are using to cut with.
