surface to sheet in vc6?... (#3074)

Hi all, I suspect that it cannot be done, but I need to know with some certainty. Is it possible to draw a truncated right cone (using surfaces, not solid), then open it to a flat sheet using vc6, build 853?? Regards, Ian.

Not automatically. If it's a regular cone, not offset, the easiest way is to recreate it as a polygonal prism with, for example, 64 sides, and the same diameter, height and cut line as your cone. Or you could work out what size base and neck perimeters are the same as the cone's, if you want to be nearer exact. Then change the object type to surfaces and delete top and bottom, and all but one face. Then you can mirror the single face along its edge, then mirror the two then the four then the eight then the sixteen and thirty-two. That'll give you sixty-four faces, the layout of your cone. You can trace beziers through the end points top and bottom if you want to smooth them out.

Hi Zumer, Thanks for that. I appreciate that you took the time to respond. As an old engineer, I remember several ways of developing all sorts of "solids". I am just seeking to be lazy, if I can get away with it!! I also appreciate that for its cost, viacad does a lot of things quite well, and I was probably hoping for a bit too much! I will do it in an appropriate way for the desired outcome. Best regards, Ian.
