I looking into getting a new MacPro, I've narrowed it down to: One 3.33GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon Westmere or Two 2.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon Westmere (8 cores) both would have the ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB video card. Feedback welcomed! Joe

Shark is based on a kernel writen by Spatial. The current Mac kernel is not multithreaded, although a 64 bit multithreaded Windows version is apperently in development. Once that ships I would guess that we might see a Mac version in a few months, or a year. Given the current state of things, I would go with the faster machine with less cores. Add as much third party (non Apple) memory as you can, and add a Sanforce based SSD for the system, applications and day to day storage. The ATI video is problematic as it does not support Cuda - required by many GPU based renderers such as Octane Render. If you have the patience, a Hackintosh is a much better buy than a MacPro.

I read some benchmarks, your best bet is 6 cores with a better clockwise (3.33GHz). Too many applications don't take advantage of Multi-Core. 8 Cores is perfect for Multi-tasking, but 6 Cores is still perfect.
FYI.
