Hi Jol,

Im strugglin' in VC to make anything work....error mssg after error mssg. I hope it's what im doing and not a limitation of the system.

I took the liberty of building the solid for you elsewhere in caser you nedeed it quick. Not perfect but close (It took 10secs using your curves).

This is an interesting post and I hope someone will build it in VC or Shark :cool:

Here is shark skin and stitched solid blue and paul's is green and then I overlayed. Skin with guides and covered ends and stitched.

Hi - thanks guys

(I need to retain the ovalness of the start & end sections throughout)

What I'm looking for is a straight-forward loft with guides to eat this up in seconds - not throw errors at me I can't understand

At the very least, a net surface should wrap around so I can stitch - but of course net surfs can't join to themselves .. why the hell not - I do not understand

Just dont get why some geometry TOTALLY foxes Shark / VC .. while others it thrives on

it's high time we got past this

Hi Jol,
I took a look at your file, your stuff is way above my skill level, but I tried something anyway.
It looks like one of your chair designs. I extruded a shape, radiused the edges, and used bend to a curve.
Don't know if this will help.

I cannot however make this point strongly enough ..

.. with these lines, I EXPECT to be able to loft with guides

and I EXPECT to be able to net surface my wireframe

2 big shitty FAILS here

Jason - was that done in Shark because I dont think its possible in VC, at least I can't do it in VC :p

Im happy to know it can be done in the camp and the surface looks nice ish' (on closer examination it is not as nice as the one I posted) so still room for improvement Tim ??

@ paul yes in shark lt

@ jol did you try to use guided skin solid tool that is only in shark fx? It look like it needs another reference to maintain the oval shape in the center where it flares out? would another curve help any of these tool get it?

JD - indeed, with another cross section you can get close

However, in attempting this relatively easy shape in various tools, you encounter a myriad of unintelligible errors

U's and Vs in same or opposite direction .. etc

I'm not a brain surgeon - I just wanna make nice forms without fraying my nerves to the point of despair

this shape should be possible with a variety of our tools .. and it isn't

If this was Studiotools, you would get a pretty good solution using a net surf tool - this involves simply dragging a fence around the entire wireframe FULL STOP.

And that's the kind of solution I expect from Tim .. nothing less !

This shape is taxing with ViaCAD. As a birail sweep, with the two widest splines as the path, it won't maintain section with the other two path splines. As a net surface about three of the path splines with only the end ellipses, there's selfintersection. An additional section ellipse corrects that. More sections improve things even more, but I did find that the spline paths don't maintain strict elliptical section quadrant to quadrant about the sweep paths. ViaCAD's more limited with regard to tools, so you'd expect that if you've ponied up for Shark, the additional tools would be able to save you some of the work, which was the exact opposite of my efforts. Attempting it with the Shark demo, it gave me every error under the sun, up to and including crashing repeatedly. Ultimately, I found it more doable with ViaCAD, with a little more work and a lot less frustration.

*scratch that. With one additional section, Shark was happy to do it. Results as I would expect, anyway. I've still got a lot to learn about the way these programs work.*

Thanks for putting all the time into this

I think this example is a good one for the guys to study .. a good toolbox should supply several potential solutions for every shape. This one has remarkably few

I'd like to see the errors dealt with and net surf improved to allow wrapping onto itself with tangency and lofts with guides should certainly do better

As you say, there is a solution - given an extra section or two - but I am sure we can do better !!
