HI,

I was working with a file, saved it, exported some .stl's, then closed the file. Checked the stls in Meshlab, quit Meshlab, reopened the file in Shark, checked a dimension. Quit Shark (no saves). Did some other things in Safari. Reopened Shark, opened that file from recent file list. Shark quits unexpectedly. Every time now, no matter what. Tried older builds of Shark, restarts, importing the file, etc. same crash result every time. Apple' crash reporter lists:

abort() called
terminating with uncaught exception of type acis_exception

So I assume there's some issue with something in the file. I don't know how or why it decided to stop working, when nothing was changed from prior working status. Same thing happening to a reference file that's got similar parts to the [other] problem file. Other (unrelated) files open fine.

Question is this: Any ideas if there's any way to salvage the files? I'd hate to have to try to rebuild them from the stls. There are a LOT of other parts that need to fit with what's in that file.

Thanks for any suggestions.

MacOS 10.10.4
Shark FX 9 + Powerpack

Already submitted to Tech support
No, I can't post the file here. It's an unreleased product with nondisclosure attached to it.

Hi Dennis,

Any chance you have a Time Machine connected to your Mac? I have had Shark FX files become unexplainably corrupt and was able to recover much work by using Time Machine. Other backups may work too.

Backups are a good idea. Reference file was essentially the backup, and it fails regardless of whether it's the working copy or the 'backup' from a different location. Unfortunately, the geometry I need is 'fresh' enough that it didn't even get to the backup stage.

What gets me is that it worked, and then it didn't. Nothing should have changed in between.

Also, no response from Tech support, so far. (which now exceeds their estimated response time). I guess it doesn't matter at this point. I've spent the past five or six days rebuilding the files based on the stls and notes and such. My annoyance level is almost to the point that I'll probably give in and switch to SpaceClaim or Solidworks.

I've had this happen to me more than a few times. It is very frustrating. Overlooking these unexpected failures, Shark FX does have the tools I need to get my work done, but it obviously has bugs and I may be pushing the program beyond it's capabilities. My files have become very large and Shark bogs down quite a lot. I used Shark FX v7 for years, skipped v8 waiting for 64 bit, and just as v9 came out v7 stopped working due to a change in Mac OS X. I tried the early demo of v9 and it was constantly crashing, screwing up files, etc. I was stuck for awhile but ended up with Shark v8. It crashes a lot, but not as bad as the early v9, and I lose a chunk of work now and then when a file gets corrupt for no apparent reason. Sometimes it tells me the backup failed and it can't save the file. I can't do anything other than force quit and start over. Has v9 gotten better? Have you lost more of your work? I'm tempted to try v9 again, but I worry about bugs like the one you are reporting here.

I spent a lot of time looking at other CAD software available on the Mac. Unfortunately little of it is suited to what I'm doing. Rhino is the cleanest, most modern UI I've seen and it was the most fun to explore, but it's just NURBS. Solidworks and SpaceClaim require a big outlay compared to Shark, on top of the commitment to relearning how to do the work, but the idea of just working and not having to recover from crashes or weird bugs that eat your work would be a huge relief!

Good luck with whatever you choose. I'd like to hear what you decide and how it goes.

Rebuilt the whole thing in Sharkfx 9. Been too busy with trying to get work done to spend the time on dealing with other software. I've noticed that the Shark UI fails all the time. Things like hitting a key shortcut, and it not working. A,S,D,F and (cmd)+F stop working about three times a day. Zooming is inconsistent, a number of other simple things fail regularly. Quitting and restarting to get some simple functionality is getting really old.

Tech support never responded to my support request. Prior issues I've brought up weren't dealt with particularly effectively, but at least they responded. The 'officia'l channels of support have been fairly worthless. It's kind of disappointing.

CAD on Mac would be more convenient for me, but if I have to do it in Windows or Linux to get something more functional, then I will. The cost of losing a job because of software failures exceeds the cost of the box and license and all that (mostly). If anyone cares, I'll share my impressions of other software (in a more appropriate thread, if that's allowed). Obviously, I chose Shark over others, with reason. The dream just didn't come true...
