I'm new to quad mesh, not to ViaCad. I've used 2D/3D v8 for two years now and still not really using v9 because I find it still very buggy. Unfortunately, I haven't seen an update to build 1109 for months now, so I don't expect much of it and continued using v8.

However the quad mesh function seems very interesting to me, as I mainly design for 3D printing. But am I correct to understand that only v9 Pro is able to show a smooth preview (I gathered it is called Subdivisions?). In the spoon demo by Tim Olsen, he is using a short cut for a smooth preview. It would be a pity if you don't get that to complete the given quad mesh tools.

Can you combine solids and meshes without being punished for it, ie printing or export problems in large projects?

And lastly, just for my confirmation: I guess it is called quad mesh, because it has four sides?

It's not a smooth preview, it's a coarse mesh being subjected to increasing iterations of subdivision. On a simple 2D level, it's like applying a 45 degree chamfer to a 90 degree corner, then 22.5 degree chamfers to the 45 degree, 11.25 to that result, and so on, and the Catmull-Clark algorithm specifies what happens, how many vertices/faces are created, and where they're to be at each iteration, so that you don't have to. A square becomes a progressively better approximation of a circle, a cube becomes increasingly closer to spherical, for example. Low-level editing is snappy, because with a coarse control frame the app shuffles relatively few transformations through memory, it slows down the higher you go, but with the smoother result, which is a physical difference, not a simple preview fudge.
You can combine SubD objects and solids, but the SubD sections will be faceted. Even if they're fine resolution, they can't be recognised as curved surfaces, so they can't easily be blended, and their edges and vertices will affect the success of shelling and other utilities. The mesh-to-nurbs capability being introduced with the VCP/FX PowerPack is what's intended to make that possible.

Thanks for the reply.

So is the subdivision preview a VC Pro function only, not for 2D/3D? Smith Micro has VCP 9 on sale this week, so it's a feature I would upgrade for.
