Hi!

I have a model which has several parts each extruded from 2D geometry. Each of those geometries are drawn on a different workplane. When I export to 2D format (DWG) for CAM, the exported file is always as its is seen from the top, which in my case is wrong.

Is there a way to export 2D as it is seen from the current view (which may be different than "top view")?

If not, what is the best way to transform the geometry so the current view becomes its too view?

Thanks,

Yuval

Hi Yuval

You could use the Model to Sheet tools to create 2D views of your 3D models.

Creating 2D Drawings from 3D Parts

If you have ViaCAD, the views will generally contain line data. Shark does a better job of preserving precision curve data.

You might also be able to use the Edit:Change Object type command which will explode a solid into curves. Then project the curves into a plane (your view) and rotate into the top view.

Hi!

I tried to use Model to sheet tool. I don't want to create new geometry, I want to export my original geometry to my CAM program.

In the end I managed to solve the problem: by selecting the objects I would like to export, copy then. Paste them into a second file while it is in 3D mode, select everything and switch into 2D mode.
ViaCAD then asks if I would like to transform the geomerty into 2D, reply yes, and then export.

In general I think that top view should not be more special than any other view. So I would highly recommend that when exporting into 2D format, export based on the current view rather than always top view. (at least add a checkbox allowing
doing so). That is more intuitive (I was quite surprised the first time I exported into DWG file and found out that I got the wrong view in it...)

P.S. I think that there is also a problem when viewing in perspective (some strange lines are displayed inside the solid)

Thanks for your great work!

Yuval

Hello Yuval

Very clever! I'm going to add a tip about this to help clarify to others how this is possible.

>> when exporting into 2D format,
The DWG file format is one of the better 3D formats as it embeds precise surface and solid data via SAT. When we export to Adobe Illustrator, we do export the 2D represent ion in the current view.
