I have Viacad pro with the latest update downloaded. Here is what I want to do. Say for example you have a board 3/4" thick by 10" long and 2" wide. I want to show a 1/4" x 45 degree chamfer stopped 2" from each end of the 10" long side that is cut on a router table. It is easy to run a chamfer the total length so there must be an easy way to do this. Thanks for your help.

There is probably an easier way, but if this is what your looking for, it was done with the "TRIM SOLID" tool.
Draw a profile and trim, or even extrude and "SUBTRACT SOLID".

You could also try the Dado tool with blinds. Larry's method gives you more flexibility however.

That was much easier. I don't know how you obtained a 45 Deg. chamfer though, please explain.
I had to use a .125 X .125 Dado, and then a .125 chamfer for the edges, and then a .354 fillet
if a fillet is required.

Thanks Larry and Tim,
Getting close now. Who would think something so simple would be so hard. This will help all woodworkers out. Yes I need the rounded out at the end as if cutting on a router table. Was able before to make the same cut Tim showed but the square corners do not work. Thanks again.

My solution is to make three parts, two ends an a center. Use a vertex chamfer on the ends and a length chamfer on the center then use Add Solid to make the three pieces one.

A router couldn't cut the vertex chambers that you used. Chamfering the centre block, adding the ends and either a conical subtraction or a linear fillet will give a manufacturable result.

How about this attempt?

This is associative. Modify the original piece and everything updates.

I had to use a fixed width fillet of 0.25 on the Stopped Dado ends.

Thanks to Mitch and Murray and everyone else. Look at the file in my first post and it shows the process I used to make the chamfers. There still my be a better way so more ideas are welcome. Tim, this would be a good to add to the woodworking joints.

I was thinking along that line as well. But I'm not clear on the transition/fillet area. A google on Stopped Chamfer gives a variety of results.

Tim,

Most chamfers are cut with a router with a bearing on it. Having the corners with the cone shape will be great for 95% of us. I tried your example doing a dado then did the chamfer but used the cone at the end and cut it out. The length of the dado is then correct and is less steps than I had.
