For the past few weeks, more often than not, I can open any file and one
of the layers will have dramatically moved around the workspace.
Even more frustrating the gripper is no longer in the center of an object
and changing from center to user position does nothing.
In fact I can't figure anyway to restore the gripper to the default position.
I'm tempted to reload the software and start from scratch, but after reading
about licensing problems I don't want to go near that.

Most things I can hack through, this one I'm clueless.. Can someone give me a clue???

Hi Dennis

Is this something that is repeatable for you? If so could you send me a example file with steps to repeat? Also what build number are you using (in splash screen).

>>but after reading about licensing problems
Encore changed the DRM to be much more forgiving in the later builds.

Next time it happens, I’ll send you the file. The trick is to figure out what steps I’m doing to cause the problem.
In another lifetime I spent 4 years software support on a 1-800 line. I understand the need to be able to
figure out the steps and duplicate the problem on demand. Otherwise the problem doesn’t exist right? \8-)

In trying to understand this, is it safe to imagine that the drawing file is just blocks and blocks of structures laid
on top of each other, something like html? Or, when you make a change to a drawing does the software
rebuild the entire drawing file from scratch?

I saw another post yesterday about the difference of layers and sublayers. It implied that sublayers seemed to be
better, but didn’t explain why. I switched yesterdays drawing from layers to sublayers and things seemed to clear up.
But as I mentioned before, this happens often with any drawing.

Also in editing an older drawing this morning I ran across “The file has geometry that has links unresolved. Are you sure you
want to continue?. Huh? A quick google search and I saw TurboCad had the same error message. The answer was to
hit the button resolve links. Sure enough my ViaCAD Pro had the same button. Issue resolved.

Can you give a one or two liner on what these “links” are? I had a flash that somewhere in the past I could link multiple
objects together, but I don’t think that was it.

thanks for your time.

Typically only those entities impacted are updated. The entity geometry is updated for the modification. If the changed entity has dependents, those dependents are updated as well.

>>I saw another post yesterday about the difference of layers and sublayers.

Just a useful way to organize entities in your drawing. ViaCAD supports a flat file structure where parts, assemblies, drawings are all in one file. Many use layers to keep track of where things are.

>>The file has geometry that has links unresolved. Are you sure youwant to continue?.

Smart links provide a parent /child connection between entities. Modifying a parent entity will update dependent children entities. For example:

1. Create a block
2. Shell the block
3. Add a fillet to one of the edges

4. Change the original block length, width or height. ( the block is a parent to the shell and fillet child operations)
5. Through smart links, the shell and fillet operations will regenerate to the new block size.

If a modification occurred to a parent and a child needs to be regenerated, you will see the alert dialog box to resolve.

Other parent/child relationships include:
--Surface from curve entities
--Solids from curve entities
--Intersections
--Model to Sheet draw views
--Section cuts

Thanks for the info. Every piece of knowledge helps.

So the past week or so, I've gone out of my way to
A - make sure everything I created was on the correct plane.
Previously I was always drawing on the same plane and spinning things around to fit.
B - using sublayers for every new piece to an object. That makes things a lot easier
to turn on and off.
C - locking every layer and sublayer I wasn't using.

So this morning I set off to recreate a simple book case I had built years ago.
The goal is to give my 14yo son the plans and see what he comes up with.

Things were going well for a while. then I saved the file, closed it and opened it again.
One side of the bookshelf is now missing. Notice that all the layers and sublayers are
locked and the side still disappeared.

Hmmm, how to attach the file? I see the check box, but nothing more....

hi, i tried your file and found a solution to restore the side.

with no objects selected, goto concept explorer -> tab "features" and do a right click to uncheck "selected only".

next open part_79 and do a right click "force resolve links" on the block

Shazam! It came back from the dead....
Locked up the layers, closed it, opened it again and we're back up and running.
I have seen references to this before but had no idea what it was.

Is this a:
1-Feature
2-Function of operator head space error?
3-Lack of operator rtfm
or ?
