Is Viacad suitable for my application? (#2890)

Hello guys
Can Viacad 2d3d or Pro be used to complete a detailed realistic model of a car body? The model would have large curved surfaces and details (lines) with a very small radius of about 2mm. These features are incorporated into most modern cars. A picture is worth a thousand words so i've attached a link to an image of a car that has the curves and creases (small radius) that I want to create.

The plan is to convert the model into g-code and machine it in sections on a friends router table. Ay info is greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time. Geoff

With some work (and probable need for work-arounds) it could be done.
If you are going to attempt such a model, then you would need blueprints and would advise some practice with simpler models to start.
There are a number of sites that provide blueprints, You could start by looking here:-

Hello Steve Thanks for you reply. Knowing it's possible I will now spend my money! Do you know if 2d3d is sufficient or will I need Pro? Do you know of any tutorials that may be helpful for me? Thanks for your time. Geoff

You could purchase 2d/32 (I paid ~$99 at CompuUSA when it was open) and simultaneously trial Pro. After about 1 year with 2d/3d i upgraded Pro. It just took me that long to get up to speed and figure out that for *my* needs/desires, i wanted pro.
These might help, if you haven't seen them:

One user felt there was no significant difference, but i feel there is... little things that add up...

The pro version does have more advanced tools that can help, but as Punch offer a good upgrade path you could just start with 2d/3d and see how it goes. If you do decide to upgrade, then you would only need to pay what is the difference in cost from 2d/3d to pro. Have a look at the links posted above by ZLC

I dont know of any specific to VC. If you make a search on the web, you will find various tutorials, the info can be used to help with creation in VC. One such site=
http://www.carbodydesign.com/tu...d-modeling-tutorials.php You could also start a thread and post questions concerning the various methods of surface creation.

Hi Geoff, >>Do you know if 2d3d is sufficient or will I need Pro? ViaCAD Pro has quite a bit more surface modeling. One tool in particular you might check out in your evaluation of which to buy is the Tangent Cover tool. This tool is great for filling nsided g1 holes as you model the body. But as Steve noted, if you do start with ViaCAD 2D/3D, the upgrade to Pro takes into account your prior investment. Tim
