In the v7 webinar @ around 5:26 min, there's an extruded part shown where a rectangle is formed around the top face, then that selected area is translated.

Can anyone show me how to select a "part" of a face just like that and transform it accordingly?

I can select a face and move it with the deep select, but I'm not sure how to cut it into a segment and transform the newly formed face.

Okay never mind I just looked closer and realized that it was not actually a translation but a boolean using the cutout solid tool.
