As simple as it appears, how does the Extrude To Object option work? Does it extrude to an object by mating faces? I don't understand the two steps taken to complete the operation, as it asks to "specify two points for extrusion direction and length", but then asks to "select termination surface or solid." Shouldn't the second part of the operation alone determine at least one or the other (direction or length)? Please help me by explaining the proper way to use this function as I'm a bit confused. Thank you.

hi, i understand the functionality of the tool as follows: given a solid (e.g. a wall) and a circle in a specific distance to the wall. then choose tool "extrude to object". select the circle. then snap to the center of the circle (snap center on) and click once. next snap to an arbitrary location of the face of the wall (snap face on) and click once. last select the wall itself as an entity. you will get a pipe starting at the circle and ending at the wall in that direction you have choosen with your clicks. directly after this you can change the entry field "distance". see what happens!

MisterRogers,
the two points should define a direction vector, and then the object should define where it ends...
Extrude Solid The Extrude Solid command takes a profile and extends the shape a user specified distance. You can extrude 2D polylines, circles, ellipses, closed splines, and polygons. There are five extrude methods.Distance Extrudes a user defined distance. Uses profile normal for extrusion direction.Vector Extrudes a distance and direction defined by two points. To Entity Extrudes a direction defined by two points and terminates at a used defined surface or solid.Mid Plane Extrudes on both sides of the profile.Thin Extrude Extrudes open or closed curves with a thickness and distance. hi mikeschn,
the user guide seems to be a bit outdated here. currently there is an additional data entry field "distance" present when using extrude to object. also the three steps shown in your illustration are no more applicable.

Okay I am home now, so I can pull up VC9 and play.
Points 1 and 2 in the picture below define both the direction vector and the distance. And the distance between the 2 points must be greater than the distance between the profile and the cylinder. If not, it'll truncate the extrude before it gets to the cylinder.

Well hells bells, this worked! Thanks Mikeschn and Rokoko. Mikeschn: I tried the exact same thing you did with point 2 of the extrusion direction several mm beyond the object and it magically extruded to the outside face of the object AND in the same contoured surface! What a handy tool that could have made my life much easier eons ago.
