Hello,
I'd like to get some help please.

I'd like to have a continous rope wrapped around a rectangle.
(pictures attached - the inside rectangle)
I've tried a couple different ways, but can't seem to get it.
I've created a length of rope, and stiched it to one piece,
then tried to bend it, but its not working like I thought it would...
I'm new to VC and in the learning phase.

Can someone help explain how this would be done?

P.S. Is there a way to get the gripper to grip a different location of the selected object? ie: the center of a circle insted of the circumference?

Well, I'm a little upset.

I actually had a bend that was acceptable, and pieced a rope frame together as needed.
As I went to save my MAJOR acomplishment :p didn't VC crash, and corrupt my project
Now I have to start over again. err.

Well, I can not seem to get the bend tool to operate correctly... and when I do, I get this: (pic attached)
The gripper is all messed up.

I could really use some help

So why would the bend tool work sometimes and not others?
Is there something I'm missing?

Here are some of the errors I'm getting:

Warping created a bad body:Bend_xxx and
The bending configuration will compress/invalidate the entity:Bend_xxx

The biggest thing I don't understand, is that I *HAVE* gotten a perfect bend out of it.
but 99% of the time I get the errors...

I can't upload the VC3 file(zipped or not) I get the error:
Your submission could not be processed because a security token was missing.
I can upload pics though... (note the gripper)

One thing I have discovered, is that I can consistantly bend the object from the top view, but only once and only on the X axis. I'll get errors from any other axis.
After the rope is bent, the gripper becomes unustable on it, but on other objects, the gripper is fine.

If what you need is something like this:

then use the extrude along path command and use the twist variable to set the desirable rope alike shape.

a video that can be useful is this

http://www.csi-concepts.com/Demo/videos/CSnap.mp4

Just use three circles instead the hexagon, consider that the bend radius should't be smaller that the total diameter of the shape (i dont know if viacad have this feature, i am in shark)

hope this help

Ah Dang it

But first and formost THANK YOU Luis! :D

It took me awhile, but I got it!
and (again) just as I clicked to save it, BOOM! VC stopped responding :(

I'm running Windows 7 64bit.
I just set VC to run in WinXP SP3 compatibility mode with admin rights... hopefully that will calm things down some...

WOOT! time to go try this again!

When making stuff that makes the program misbehave, crashes, long wait times after rotating, etc etc. It's better to make a new file IE "save as" every time you make progress so you don't lose work. Under file/preferences/filing check the "auto save" box and set the options to something you can live with.

Thanks Chuck, I now have autosave enabled.

I do get a little frustrated learning this(or any new program) to its fullest potential,
but I must say, the more I learn what this program does, the more impressed I am with its capabilities.
Its finding the 'right' way to do it thats my biggest problem ;)

More questions will be coming as I make headway! :D

Chris

FYI, this is what I'm working towards:

Yes, I have ViaCad 8 though.

I use Vectric VCarve Pro software, but there is no 3D design capabilities with it, so I made the 3D rope with ViaCad,
used Cut3D to generate the toolpaths and imported it into VCarve pro, where I could finish my toolpaths.

So, yes I made the rope with Viacad, and then I CNC'd it.

sorry, I guess I could have made my pictures a little larger...

You guys have never done this?

I've been having fun with ViaCad! I have some bolts that I was working on as well...
as soon as I get the material to make it, I will be CNCing some more!

Ditto, Mogal.

I've been using ViaCAD along with CamBam for quite a while now, for both 2d and 3d work.

In fact it's such a good combination, that it's popular with other CamBam users too.

I use shark for all my modeling, then past in to a cam software for various process:
sheet metal cut on cnc plasma, CNC turret, waterjet, cnc milling, profiling and routing.
