Is there a way to convert a closed surface into a solid in Shark?

No, surfaces don't have thickness. Per example, if you extrude your surface for a minimum dimension (.001"), now you surface will be a solid.

Jean-Francois,
I understand that, but I am more wondering if I were to create an object in another program, import it into Shark, and the imported object is a closed volume/surface. Is there a way(command) to make it a solid object?

The Stitch Solid tool should do it.

First, martin, the answer comes from Nobert!

Any way, do you mean with disable this option "Closed Volume Required" the surface comes a solid!! .....Yes I can stitch the surface and in menu / Change Object Type... I have Solid like option.!! Strange!

You can turn a surface into a "solid" that is not closed as Martin has noted by unchecking the Check Volume item.

Use this if you want to do solid modeling feature operations on surfaces such as a variable radius blend along a surface.

However, if can be a bit tricky as you need to manually adjust the direction of the surface for many solid modeling operations to work. Your surface normals need to point away from the outward material of the surface.

Ok that all makes sense, but it's not working. Key thing to realize here is I want to bring an imported object into Shark to convert to solid.

As a simple test, I exported a 12" square as an .obj file.

I then imported it into Shark 5.5, and tried the Stitch tool. It gives me errors. "Invalid solid created during healing". "Could not stitch into Part". Imported obj file attached.

It should work on such a file shouldn't it?

That worked ok for me. I read your file in and used the defaults to stitch the facets into a solid.

I was able to highlight the cube and do a Change Object Type into Faces, then use the Stitch tool to get a solid. I could also do a Change Object Type directly into a solid without problem.

blowlamp,

I was able to correctly make a solid via your method from the cube. But it won't work via the stitch tool...hmmm.

It still works ok here. Did you Change Object Type to Faces first? Perhaps reload the file and try again.

Tim,
Is turning a series of Faces into a Solid dependant on the amount of memory, or is there a face # limit?

Thanks
Norbert

Hi Norbert,

There is no limit, but I've found attempting to do more than 1000 facets can be hit or miss with ACIS.

It also depends on the accuracy and size of the facets. If you have small facet lengths, you many need to decrease the default maximum stitch length.

The initial model posted was facets (not surface).

Hi.

Will the "thicken" tool be of any use?

(I use it to thicken surfaces, where my surfaces come from a mesh (obj or other DXF 3D type of mesh) which i stitch in groups, and then thicken variously depending on where they "steel" is located in my model.)

Using Shark build 948, unable to fill skin with solid using all combinations of Change Object Type and Stitch Options.

Any suggestions?

Sorry, in my attached file the object was way off at 2:00 oclock....

Attached it's at origin, along with the one rail sweep lines that generated the object.

Do I need to close off one end somehow? Or is there a problem with the object?

Thanks Much
