I'd like to propose a "Drafting Assistant Micro-Delay"

This could be user-settable and work on a fraction of a second

The problem: The drafting assistant always trys to help me out

Nice - but sometimes .. REALLY too much !!

I know the vacinity of the objects I'm interested in snapping to ..
.. so, in moving, rotating or scaling my objects to that vacinity ..
.. I have to travel quickly through unwanted territory

Whilst doing this, user feedback is horrible. The drafting assistant is busy busy, snapping to all and sunder .. "Do you want this endpoint ?" "Maybe this align y ?" "Aha this centre ?" .. and my user experience is like listening to poetry from a stutterer.

Gentle, smooth is what I'm after .. till I get to my destination .. then I'd like some options !

Currently it feels anything but dynamic !!
In fact, it even makes Concepts feel slow : (

One solution is to turn off the x,y snaps .. yes, this helps .. but I can never be bothered flicking snaps on and off .. and besides, new users won't benefit from that

So .. this micro-delay TM would show snap-possibilities ONLY when the mouse is in the vacinity of that snap influence for more than say 1/10 of a second

When moving quickly across the screen then, this snap influence would NOT be activated

Now, this would be SmartSnapping TM

Adding to the feeling of being un-dynamic is the constant flickering of the (eg) Align X, Align Y labels

Must these labels flicker so ?

I'm developing a twitch

- Draw a line .. move to along the X .. the "Align X" label flickers wildly

- Why also, when you stop moving .. does the label dissappear ? - (Note the align vector is still showing ?)

Jol,
Have you tried reducing the size of your pick radius in preferences /snaps ?

I find the default 12 pixels unworkable as things are constantly being selected - and flashing all over the place. I find 6 pixels far more workable, and have used this all the way back to the days of Vellum 2d.

When you first change you might find it hard to deal with the smaller pick radius, but over time I think you will appreciate it, so try and stick with it for at least a day or two.

Nick .. thanks .. interesting !

I think de-tuning the pick-box like this does help .. I'll play with it as you say for a day or two

If I'm moving along a vector however, even if my pick box is set to one, it'll trigger a snap

So, I like that and perhaps we should consider lowering the default slightly ..

.. but I think there's still room for a little linger-aware smart-snapping !

I like your idea of slowing down the way that CU gives selection options. Included in this, I would like to see features highlighted on mouse over, like surfaces, solids, radii, shells, and all that. But, a selection resolver (list or Alias style marking menu, etc.) is still a good idea.

Then we need to try some other stuff

We've established that one reason the interface feels laggy is the oft overhelpful snaps assistant ..

Can we have for example have .. a (factory) shortcut key that kills all snaps whilst eg: placing or manipulating spline points - or just moving an object when the screen is full of objects ?

ShortCut:Snaps:Enable should do this (toggle on/off snaps)

There is no such Shortcut !

Edit : Ooops ! My eyes are deceiving me .. it's right there ! Apologies

You need to scroll up - weirdly - to see it .. surely this should be scroll down !?

Can we get the shortcut sub-lists to scroll downward ?

It's easy to miss those commands that are concealed upwards - this is not the conventional way scroll menus work

They are alphabetical from the top after all
