This has bugged me for years, and prevents me from using groups nearly as much as I would like.

If I have a bunch of objects on Layer 1, and Layer 2 is the active layer, when I group the objects the group is now on Layer 2. Why cant they stay on Layer 1?

Worse, if I then ungroup the objects I get the quizzical message:

UnGroup
Would you like to change the group parent to be the same layer as the group?

What is the group parent?

Why not just give me the option to always keep groups on the layer that the geometry originated on, instead of creating this confusing situation ?

If originating geometry is on more than one layer, tell me when I try and create the group, and let me fix things then, not create this awkward situation after.

Why should grouping objects change their layer ?

I cant think of any other operation that changes the layer of an object.

A group can consist on any objects comprised of multiple layers. But each object (ie group entity) can only belong to one layer. When you make a new group entity it's layer is assigned to the current construction layer.

The original geometry may consist of multiple layers. But the original entity layers are preserved. So if you ungroup, you can ungroup to the original entity layers or change the originals to the group layer.

Tim,
I understand all of what you wrote. Its all very logical, makes perfect sense, but in reality it is a pain in the ass to deal with and often makes groups more trouble than they are worth. Why not have the dialog come up when you create the group - Items are not all on the same layer and will be moved to the active layer do you want to continue?, rather than when I try an ungroup and I get the frustrating message.

I am in SLT v8.0.0 Build 1003.

When I ungroup, I get that same message. But, in every case I was so frustrated with the other task with the group that this message threw me for a loop and I'd never dig into the manual to figure it out.

Now, I know. I too second that on group creation that a dialog says what is going on at grouping. But, to take if further, on ungrouping, there needs to be a "Group Manifest" palette of some sort that reminds the user of on what layers the about-to-be-de/ungrouped (and possibly multiply-grouped) group are. Otherwise, the user has to crawl all up and down the tree or maybe deep-inspect the group to find out how many more groups are embedded in a group.

Just saw in an older post, in:

About Tim's adding the "add to group" / "remove from group" feature in context-clicking of groups.
