I am having an issue trying to translate a fairly complex assembly. This is actually a sub-assembly of the larger complete assembly. I have been modeling the sub-assemblies with the expectation that I will be able to import all the sub-assemblies into the main assembly and position them properly, relative to the other sub assemblies. This has worked fine so far, but so far the sub assemblies have been relatively simple.

I have figured out where this assembly is supposed to end up relative to the origin, so I am trying to translate it in the model so that when I import it into the main model it ends up in the right place. I 'show all' layers, then 'select all', then use translate tool to input my x,y,z distances. I get about 50 or so error messages, the parts split up and end up everywhere and it takes about 5 minutes for all this to happen.

This assembly consists of pretty basic parts, mostly cylinders and cubes, with some imported .sat fasteners (bolts, socket head capscrews, setscrews), some imported catia(v4 i think) parts, and 1 imported .stp part.

I think the most complicated (certainly the most memory intensive) components of this assembly are the fasteners. I have used the hole feature to put in all the tap drill holes into the part, then imported the fastener, used the linear or polar array to copy the fasteners and align them with the holes, then subtracted the fasteners from the part, retaining the subtracted fasteners.

Is there a better way to get this assembly to where I want it ? An option when importing to offset would be good, or just being able to translate the assembly would be good too, but that's what I'm trying and it's not working.

The model size is 131 mb.

Thanks
Ryan

It may not be the answer you want to hear, but I don't think VC / Shark handle this well - objects don't seem to like being moved from where they were created. Where they were created appears to be part of what they are and shouldn't be !

So --- I would save them as they are first - then edit>simplify and verify>check objects ... this will convert any complex nurbs geometry that can be described as simpler analytics (like part of a sphere or a pipe etc) - and check there are no obvious problems with any geometry

Then, I would try it again

If that didn't work, I'd edit>remove links and try again (this is not ideal as your parts are then not as editable as they once were)

If that didn't work, I'd make the parts dumb by exporting as (late version) ACIS files and importing back in (if there's still a problem, do the same with stp or igs

hope that helps

You may want to explore X-refs too - but try with something simple first

I would imagine that if those fasteners are threaded - and you've got multiple instances of them, then they're going to be slowing things down massively too.

I'd leave the thread detail out of the drawing, to speed things up.

I managed to get it to repair, after a few tries, however shark crashes when I try to simplify object.
I managed to export to acis v17, as v20 did not work.
I can now import the dumb acis into the model, and rotate it, but still no transform.

I thought x-refs might be the answer, unfortunately there is zero documentation to help me out. I had a brief play with it, and some things seem odd to me, but I'll have to play some more.

Regarding the threaded holes, I would prefer to leave them in the model if at all possible, as it would be an easy thing to miss for the guy making the sheet views (i.e. 7\16 hole - is it meant to be clearance for a 3\8 bolt, or tapped to 1\2 ?). At least with the thread in the solid, it is very obvious what the hole is meant for. Also when you put the fasteners into the model for BOM purposes, if you check for interferences you will see all the interference between the fastener and the solid, requiring you to go through each interference to see if it is supposed to be there, or if you screwed up somehow.

It would be nice if we had a 'threaded hole' tool much like the simple hole, counterbore, and countersink, with user inputs like major dia., minor dia., thread pitch, and maybe a couple of different thread forms. Although how this would be accomplished using less memory than the current method is a mystery to me, but at least it would be editable.

If there are any suggestions or tips on the x-refs, I would love to hear those, as at the end of the day, I think that might be the best method.

Thanks
Ryan

I just downloaded the 64 bit shark beta, and tried again.
Still no translate of the sub assembly.
I managed to export to acis v17 and bring the dumb solids into the main assembly and rotate as well as translate this time. I guess the 64 bit made a difference.
Still fiddling around with x-refs.

Well done Ryan - sounds like you're making progress

I'm convinced there are some bugs slowing you're having to work around here
