Yeah I know, for some reason I have never been able to open Viacad files with Shark. I can see what you are aiming at from the jpg.

The area of concern that has been giving me problems can be seen in my latest attachments.

I think the answer to my question is that it is too complicated to model from a geometry point of view.

I don't agree with your conclusion.

Here is the file in ACIS Sat v17 format that will import into any Punch! CAD program and just about anything else too.

It seems to do just what you asked for originally.

I believe that you have modeled a perfect ramp, but is it representative of what happens in the real world? If you take a look at my last attachments the true interference between the cutter, the side surface and the bottom surface can be seen.

Anybody got a high end cam system? Mine is very light so the resolution is not very good.

Maybe I'm just missing something here (or this is just way over my head), but I just don't really understand what the issue is.

Having previously worked for SolidWorks and CAMWorks as a Sales Rep, I regularly saw much more complicated models that were modeled and machined no problem. Many of these models had features that were very similar to the "ramp" with very gradual slopes and transitions. There rarely was an issue with taking any solid model and turning it into a part that could be turned out on a CAM machine.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I just don't see this feature of your model as being either difficult to model or to reproduce on a CAM application. ViaCAD can do it properly, and with the appropriate CAM software and equipment, producing the actual part shouldn't be much of a challenge either.

I don't seem to be able to view your attachments, but I'm confident that when you find a way to look at the files I posted you'll see where the problem is, because I know I can.

If you're running Shark, you should be able to just open the ViaCad file (File>Open). If that's not working, what version of Shark are you running?

SAT r17 won't import into older versions of software, or new versions of some software too. I sent it to someone with Cimatron, and it came in with missing geometry. Next week, I'll do an export and see if my friend can run a simulation. The geometry that I'm seeing in the file supplied looks reasonable though. (STEP is a more universal interchange format-but I don't know anything about ViaCad, so I can't really comment with authority here).

I'm curious to see how the CAM software deals with the ramp as modeled vs a plunge and helical ramp. I am assuming a 2.5 D mill for this?

I missed what was going on in the posted jpegs. They look like two big arcs that aren't really this ramp problem.

This is not about machining the ramp, if you look at the attached file or the jpg's that I attached earlier you will see that the cutter diameter and bottom surface at the plunge position intersect with the projected ramp.

It is only slight but it is this interference that leads me to believe that it would be near impossible to calculate this area and to then model it.

The area that I am talking about is very small and I do not believe that there would be anything left of the cutter radius on the ramp as when it takes off on its 3 axis movement the 8mm diameter at the bottom of the cutters radius wipes out the 1mm radius that had been cut.
