Hello.

I just stumbled across the 32bit-limit ...

I tried to create a Menger Sponge.
I managed to model third Iteration (see attachment).

But on creating fourth iteration ViaCAD Pro crashed with an ACIS-Error.

I have to admit that i did not model subtractively like in the article
on Wikipedia (i.e. take material from the cube),
I did the Sponge by modeling the cube, creating the array (or the matrix)
and then fusing all cubes together ...

I also downloaded the latest 32bit-development-snapshot of OpenSCAD
and here i also ended up with being able to model third, but not fourth
iteration.
Since i also have access to a 64bit-Windows-PC i tried fourth iteration
with 64bit-snapshot and tadaaa - it worked.

Has anybody else run into this limit ?
Is there a way to define this limit more "precisely" ?

I guess the file size (like mentioned by Tim Olsen in another thread) has
something to to with it, but maybe the number of facets or something
like that also has an influence ?

Hi Roland,

The 32 bit versions of ViaCAD and Shark will become unstable around 2.2 GB of used memory. It does not matter how much RAM you have, as it it a limited related to a 32 bit address. On mac, you can check how much the app is using with Activity Monitor. Not sure what it is on PC.

If you have a Mac you might want to try this modeling challenge on the ViaCAD Pro v9 beta which is 64 bit. The largest file I tested was about 12 GB.

If you have the .vcp file, send to me and I'll give it a go:)

A few years ago I had an animation project for a fuel grade ethanol appliance. I export components from the engineers preferred CAD App, import into SharkFX and export .obj files from SharkFX into Cinema 4D. It was somewhat tedious, there were many features to simplify or erase. Luckily, SharkFX was up to the task if I worked on sub-assemblies. Otherwise, it would not open the 2-3GB files. I used an xref approach to minimize memory use in C4D. The funny thing is that the engineer thought it was all straight forward. I suggested he read my notes. He got half way through and was baffled by the workflow, but happy that his client was delighted. SO, yes, I have encountered the 32bit memory limit often. I look forward to 64bit SharkFX (hopefully with the subdivision functionality/module).
