Well after trying to find out what is happening, I have come to the conclusion that the 2 rail sweep can work, although it can be a case of having to attempt it a few times.

An example of this is below.
01: 2 circles as rails with a rectangle as section to sweep
02: the result when the inside circle is picked first for the rails (incorrect)
03: After selecting the outside circle first for the rails, the correct result.

This does not always work, sometimes the rails need to be changed to other spline types, then a case of picking the correct rail first. So it is a little unpredictable, but can usually now get a result eventually.

A bit of an "Hit or miss" situation.

There should be no order in which to pick curves to build a surface/solid...this "should" be a relatively simple fix for Tim/Ryan?

If like you say it takes multiple attempts to get a satisfactory result (if you havent given up by then) then to me the HELP is either useless or poorly documented OR you havent bloody read it !:D

You should try it.

The help file states nothing about pick order. nor the fact that rails need to be changed at times to other types for the rails to work. (Then again, there is nothing in the help file about pick order of sections for guide skin surfaces/solids.)

VC/Shark certainly does not appear to be a user friendly CAD, well certainly not on the PC.

An example where 2 trimmed ellipse are used for the rails:-

No thanks....I simply dont have the time or patience to muck about. Rhino produces this with just a few clicks and using nurbs curves, how many curves did you try :D:D

My major problems with this come when I have 2 closed CP spline rails, as if/when the 2 rail sweep fails I need to convert, the problem then being, if I change the rails to Bezier, then the start point changes, if I change them to Int, then the start/end angles are lost. Not a major problem if the splines are planer, but a lot of the sweeps I make are in 3d space, so it is a nightmare.

I have gone back to Rhino for quite a number of models I have built, simply because I want what is expected to be produced on the first attempt, not to have to mess around changing selection/types :(

Is there a way to view these avi's without going thru rapidshare? If i can't directly click-n-run it or download for later review, i just close the page and think, "Next?"...

Actually, I may be mistaken, but I think zerolengthcurve is a PC user! :p

Works absolutely fine here! :D

Sorry, but can you tell me exactly how you drew your rails. Whenever I try and reproduce your solid they come out as they are suposed to.

Honestly, there are millions of places out there to have asinine arguments about PC/Mac
If You really feel the need to fight the oldest of all flame wars, I have no sympathy .... get a frickin‘ live.

I created one Ellipse from origin (X0,Y0,Z0), then created a second offset along the X, I then created a trimming line on the X axis and trimmed the bottom half from both Ellipse. see pic.

I have tried this now in VC Pro 835 and Shark 835 (both PC versions) with same result.(and checked on a second PC with same result)

I agree.

Please, to all, I do not want this thread to go off topic. I believe these problems with the 2 rail sweeps need attention.

The only "Mac vs PC" I am interested in (in this thread), is if there is a difference in how the 2 rail sweeps are handled.
