I added part 1 to part 2 with "add solids". I selected the resulting combined solid. I dragged it to a new location with the gripper. Why does original part 1 disappear when I drag the combined part?

It could be your graphics card. Try Shade options and make dynamic shade to wireframe. So when you drag, it will be in wireframe but turns solid when released.

Also be sure to use the check object command to be sure there's no problem with the combined solid.

Thanks, Rockyroad. I'll try your suggestions next time it happens. Right now it's doing what it's supposed to do. I'm too new at this to know why!
