Hello folks -

I scan parts with a Next scanner, it outputs STL, VRML, OBJ files, and I would like to work on those a bit, but it seems that getting these into ViaCad is near impossible - At least in a Solid form (I have to output to a 3d printer)...

To give you an idea, figure that I scanned a fish, and now I want to add a stand for it...
Then I would LOVE to paint the lips read and give it a moustache...

Any ideas?

I'm exploring some technology to convert facets to NURBS. If you have an interesting file, zip and email it to me and I will add it to my list of test files.

Select and change the object type to faces, then stitch them to solid. It won't change triangles into curved surfaces, but if the scan is closed, it'll give you a faceted solid.

Hmm - changing the object type really only accomplishes one thing... :) ViaCad crashed... The source is a OBJ and roughly 10Mb.

The really scary thing, is that I just want to take the Obj file and convert it to VRML for my printer - and yes, I really want to keep the texture map intact (Printer is full color).
I know - I'm full of wishful thinking...

That will likely be too many facets to convert into a solid.

You should be able to import the obj and then export as vrml.

FYI, our STL format currently does not support color. Color is not officially supported but I've noticed there are some variations to the official standard that do support color.
