hehe- that's almost a cliche of the English isn't it?? :D
You know the English are essentially German anyway? The 'real' english are in fact the Welsh!
I love lots of things about Germany- apart from, believe it or not, German cars! British cars were always the best ;) :(:(

Sometime I despair of those English who can do nothing but sit on their hands and moan about the world.

Bill, Bath university? That was probably the WORST example to pick! Sure there is R&D that still exists within
universities , I was recently working for a company within Warwick university, that had very good R&D, but the R&D came to those who could also produce a saleable product- in their case a photographic printer (and even then they were struggling to cope). I'm sure Bath university (Poly?) gets a fair whack of cash because of the close proximity of Dyson vacuum cleaners. But in the real world, and that even includes poor old James Dyson (Bath City council have been dreadful in responding to Dyson's demands and helping Dyson build his Engineering university/ college), our wise and all knowing government, are NOT throwing money at British R&D.
Worse still are the best of current British industries (now that everything else has been sold off to other countries); Nuclear power, GM, Pharmaceuticals, etc face the fiercest of opposition in this country due to the current wave of environmentalist and anti-vivisection political think-tanks.
