What does ACIS stand for?

ACIS stands for Alan (Grayer), Charles (Lang), Ian (Braid) System. They were the 3 people at Three-Space Ltd who initially wrote the solid modeler for Spatial Technology. ACIS is the geometry kernel that drives ViaCAD & Shark. Prior to ACIS they developed ROMULUS and later ParaSolid. As for the files ACIS exports, .sat stands for "Save As Text" , and .sab which stands for "Save As Binary".

What's the best way to get my Parasolid files into ACIS so I can import the SAT files into Shark? And I'm not being funny. All the parasolids are from NX.

Doesn't NX (ParaSolids) export .SAT files directly ?

I know SolidWorks (ParaSolids) does

Mike, there's a beta available at the self-explanatory cadexchanger.com that might be of help....

Jol,

No, NX does not export SAT. Besides, it's the rather large library of parasolid files that I'd like to translate.

Zummer,

Thanks for that link!

Tim,

Nice bit of Trivia! :-)

You will need a translator to convert data between these two kernels. From NX you might want to try STEP.

LOL! They sound like Linux-app-naming people... No, wait, theirs (ACIS') are closer to "normal"... OTOH, some Linux-based apps' names are astoundingly mind-boggling. It's no wonder they're difficult to market.

Got me to thinking CENTURION:

Charles, Ephraim, Nancy, Tiberius, Ulysses, Ramses, Igor, Oscar and Nestor.... (It's Friday...) and that spawned because I saw "ROMULUS" and thought of an old ST episode... hehehe
