Shark FX 7 VS Latest ViaCAD 2D/3D (#5059)

I really shouldn't of bought Shark, it's way above me especially without formal training. But it had the gripper when ViaCAD didn't at the time (and I had more money) and the gripper was essential so I spent the money on Shark. Anyway I keep seeing upgrades to ViaCAD Pro and wonder if the second to last upgrade of Shark is not as robust or user friendly as the latest ViaCAD Pro? Can I cross downgrade or wait until ViaCAD Pro catches up to my outdated version of Shark fX v7? Upgrades of Shark are very expensive while ViaCAD are very affordable. There was a YouTube talking about making a spoon ViaCAD9ConceptTo3DPrint and it talked about mesh and subdivision tools and would like to know what the equivalent is on Shark? I bit off more then I can chew with Shark Fx. Sigh. Dave

Stick at it, follow the tutorials, and keep trying to model things. The interface of VC and Shark is essentially the same, VC and VCP aren't easier to use. They lack some of Shark's tools, so some things are harder/not possible. The new tools added to VC/P V8 and V9 don't detract from Shark V7, which is still more powerful. The mesh and subdivision tools are additions to V9 VC/Pro, they're freeform modelling tools and are a step away from parametric CAD, which is very . Shark V9 is still under development and is available in beta. Why don't you visit punchcadlabs.com and give it a run? It doesn't have a draw-my-imagination tool, so you're still going to need to learn how to use it, but when you do, it'll give you a better idea of which way you might want to upgrade.

Yeah ok I understand. ViaCAD 9 has the mesh advantage that Shark V9 will also have when it's released. And Shark has constraints and some other advantages to ViaCAD. With lower budget I'm just going to downgrade to ViaCAD Pro until I can afford to upgrade Shark again. I am doing what you said, just digging in and doing tutorials and going through the user manual and attempting to build things. I did ask a question I don't think got answered which was if you Group objects together vs Union them what is the advantage disadvantage. Of course I need to experiment with that but maybe there are some subtle things and important distinctions to know when to group vs Union. Thanks for the info Dave

You can't create a fillet between separate solids that occupy the same space, or part-space. Physical properties can't be derived or relied on for a grouped entity because of this possibility either, and PunchCAD doesn't have assembly physics capacity even if the physical logic is valid. Multiple separate solids also have too many possible solutions for situations where blend surfaces meet: adding them resolves that ambiguity. You can fillet discrete or grouped surfaces with Shark's and VC Pro's surface Booleans, however, because they don't have to resolve corners the same way, or comply with the same physics requirement. Grouping is used for utility reasons like complementary selection for transformation or keeping a compound profile coherent for lofting.
