I want to be able to cancel a function when it does not do what I want. Is there not a simple way, like pressing the esc key, to do this?

Shouldn't this be in the manual?

The selection tool might help a little. You can also assign a shortcut key to the selection tool. I use the q key. Goto file menu --> Short Cuts... Then in the dialog box on left goto category tools then in the Selection box on the right pick selection then assign a key. You can save shortcuts to different names as well so you have a lot of options. it is case sensitive so uppercase vs lower is different keys.
