using an OpenGL-based 3D modeler in connection with a probably incomplete Windows emulation may lead to some glitches e.g. with the display output, better run a virtualized Windows by using free Oracles VirtualBox maybe in connection with stable Win 7.

Hi,

I don't use Ubuntu, but debian and I can state, that ViaCad does not work from VirtualBox (as almoust every Windows CAD fails in VirtaulBox).
Its a problem with the z-order of the windows (or the like) and the refresh-cycle of the drawing area ...
... which results in destroyed submenues.

Opening menues from menubar works, but any popup created from that (sub-)menue will be cut/invisible by the drawing area.

Additionally any popup (context menue) will be invisible :(

This is not an exact answer, but I have run V7 Pro on Ubuntu with Wine.
Just basic stuff, but no problems. Likely pretty good overall. In fact this was one of my major reasons
why I purchased and got into ViaCad so I could run it on Linux.

Have not had the time to go as far as I want with it.
I admit I am mostly running my V8 and Shark 5.5 on Vista , but I will eventually try them all and fool around with it on Ubuntu.

Have not tried newer versions, but I am seriously considering trying it with the 64 bit beta.

It would be good if we all keep this thread going as we try things.

I also have Sketchup ( which also runs well on Linux ) , but I am really not liking their company's pricing and attitude too much on both accounts.

meant OpenGL-based 3D modelers, CAD for 2D stuff and 3D wireframe should work w/o problems.

could imagine, that commercial products as 'Parallels Desktop' and 'VMware' do a better job in managing OpenGL-based 3D display output.

I have been using VCP 6 and 7 in VirtualBox since 2008, and SLT v8 since 2011. Other than with bad-geometry models due to my questionable techniques, I have had few crashes that I can recall in VirtualBox. (Win 7, no patches...)

Recently, I was using SLT v8 Build 1003 in VBox 5.0.0 RC 2. I recently was having bizarre crashes that may have been due to WDDM being enabled. I ripped out the VBox video driver (via windows), downgraded VBox to 4.3.28 r100329, and so far for several days now, have had no crashes. By the way, I did NOT use the WDDM nor Safe Mode driver options. There is a third option of sorts I used the bypass option ( Read the VBox Install manual... Search WDDM and read the various pages discussing skipping WDDM and just using the basic driver.)

As for WINE, I installed SLT v 8 (I am running PCLOS, the currently available release). WINE right now is 1.62 (IIRC). So far, the only oddity I noticed is that on certain mouse wheel pans the model hyper-moves, but is controllable if I slow down. I am using FlyWheel to enhance my mouse in win7 in VBox and in Wine.

(I was able to FINALLY get Lotus SmartSuite (Yeh, I am old school and staunchly stand by LSS 9.8) running in WINE, and the text in Lotus Approach dialog boxes appears at 1920x1080 resolutions, something not possible in VBox unless on the laptop LCD I resize the VBox screen to less than maximized but keep my 22" LCD screen maximized. Reportedly, in the LSS forums, other users had Approach dialog boxes missing text strings, and reportedly that was the result of Approach Corporation or Lotus possibly hard-coding the text for the 1990s 16-bit/8-bit. But, this issue seems to magically be non-existent in WINE. Interesting)

So far, in WINE, SLT v8 seems to be running pretty well. This is as of last night. I need to do more use testing to be certain it is not just my excitedness blinding me to anything.

I have not got SLT 9 yet. I still have win7 32-Bit.

But, surprisingly, PCLOS autodetected that my Gateway NV55S09u is 64-bit hardware. NOTHING in the marketing material, nothing at Best Buy, nothing on the box, and not even win 7 32-Bit reported anything 64-bit about my hardware. So, I was pleasantly shocked that this machine is 64-bit. My VBox install, therefore, being forced to match the OS type, is also 64-bit. Still, win 7 is 32-bit.

Wine seems to have been greatly improved. The last time I think I tried was when I had PCLOS 2012.iso.

I hope this info helps.

Possible turn-offs to some...

These are some issues that may be resolved eventually by the WINE team, but in the interim might turn off non-seasoned or even heavy SLT v 8 users (I haven't tested VCP v7, and probably won't):

Viewports:

Viewports that are multiples, like 2, 3, 4, 3:x:left, and so on might flicker or alternately wink out in order or in random order.

Floating windows and Viewports can disappear if the non-VP areas of the are clicked.

Pallets:

Any pallets invoked by shortcuts or menu dropdowns might disappear in the background. They can be brought back by the usual means. But, seeing them disappear can be annoying.

Tips:

After a fresh install, the Did You Know and Tips dialogs might be obscured graphically, lending to the idea that SLT crashed or is unresponsive. If you have it maximized and cannot get to your task bar or other areas of Windows and cannot recall your shortcuts to kill VCP/SLT, you might be forced to kill your session or reboot the machine, depending on how you've enabled/disabled/intercepted system-wide shortcuts.

These are probably legacy issues of the code back in that time. But, given how much of SLT works and that I have not had (or cannot seem to repeat what might have been) a native-win-like crash event, I think SLT is at least stable and largely usable.

Interstingly, a file I delibarately chose because it is around 237 MB saved and consumes about 600 RAM in both win 7 and WINE consumes a reportedly sub-700 MB RAM in WINE, while turning on the same layers in the Win 7 instance burns up 1.01 to 1.1 GB of RAM.

That file was one that forced me to break down my geometry and revisit recreating the geometry fresh in case of badness in the file somewhere. If it were not for the disappearing dialogs (which I can re-invoke) I might regularly stay in WINE -- JUST -- due to the apparent much-better RAM efficiency in WINE/KDE than possible in Win 7.

Tim: If you and the WINE HQ people go together, you might be able to find a way to make security better but then offer the app OS-independent. Not sure if that is a good business model for you, but it might open up intriguing ramifications for running the apps on tablets -- assuming the UI/UX/Interactivity issues with touch can be resolved for the greatest number of users. Still, I would likely not use SLT or any CAD app on a tablet unless it were something like a 20" tablet, so I could view/work with more geometry.
