So here is my situation:

I am importing a file i created in a vector program (exporting as .dwg)
I am able to get that 2d image imported into viacad no problem.

My shape is pretty basic, it's a rectangle, with a few small circles placed within the boundry of the rectangle.
here is a simple representation below. (basically it is a control panel, where i will extrude out the base, which will leave me with a solid flat panel, and the necessary holes punched out, where I need to insert my components. Simple enough

So once i extrude it i end up with a solid, represented below, with the holes cut thru.

So here is my question:
Lets say now that the walls have some height to them, I want to punch out another hole along one of the side walls. I can't represent this in my origional image, since it is only 2D, and does not have any extruded walls yet. But once i pull it into ViaCad and extrude out the base with the push/pull tool, now i have walls. Whats the best way, on a solid to now add in a circle or square and align it to my object, and cut it out. I tried to just put a simple circle in there and push pull it, but that seems to make the circle turn into a cylinder. Do i need to make it into a cylinder and then do some boolean subtract? or is there another way? I have some familiarity with 123D and if i recall, you were able to place a 2d circle and then extrude, and if you extruded in the opposite direction it cut out vs extruding the shape.

thanks
- Sam

Hi Sam

Locating the circle or shape can be based on using existing geometry, You can offset edges of the existing or drawin construction lines from existing geometry. A good shortcut key to use is the "c" key it will toggle the plane. When you have an object selected and hover your mouse over a snap point till a snap shows like endpoint center and then prees c key till you are on the plane you need.
Once you draw you circle or shape use the cutout tool to remove material. The tool has a dropdown with 3 options distance, vector , along path.

Regards

Jason
