I like Tim's demo of importing a PDF and scaling it for dimensions. http://www.csi-concepts.com/Demo/videos/Tracing.mp4 Last year I followed this tutorial, using a jpeg. The trick was to save the jpeg at the proper resolution before importing into ViaCAD Pro 9. At that time last year I was using a 4 year old 21" iMac with up to date OS X for that time.

I'm pulling my hair out. It seems anything (jpeg, PNG, or PDF) I import or open in ViaCAD Pro 9 imports as a black box with a SMALL corner portion of my image at the bottom. Most of the image is missing.

Using iMac 27" Retina, latest Mavericks.

I need to trace some PVC plumbing. Took photos with iPhone 5.

I've tested with same exact images I did last year successfully, and now I can NOT replicate what I did, using same images I imported into ViaCAD. I now get the black box.

I've tried various software to prepare the images, like Affinity Designer, Photoshop, Pixelmater and Apple's Preview. None help.

What am I missing? A preference? I don't think there was an update on ViaCAD, so using same app version.

I've attached both images. One from the camera (iPhone) and other is results of opening image in ViaCAD. I have used both OPEN and IMPORT, both with same results.
(Sorry, I can't seem to attach my files, the option doesn't seem to appear)
How do I attach files?

>> Retina, latest Mavericks.

What build do you have? The early v9 releases on Mac had an issue supporting images on Retina screens.

I have build 1109. When I check for updates, it says

ViaCAD Pro
Version: 9.0.0
Build: 1109
You are running the most current build. No update is necessary.

Thanks. At work I have a MacBook Pro 2012. So I thought I would be clever and import the PVC PART jpeg into my Laptop. It worked! Then I saved it as a ".vcp" doc on the iCloud Drive. Everything good so far.

I went home, and opened it in ViaCAD. NOPE! Again the black box. It indeed is a problem with Retina 27" iMac.

Attached is before and after.

Same problem here. I can only see a portion of the image, also with a black area added.

I am running ViaCAD 2D 9, build 1109, on a late 2013 15-inch MBP with retina display and Mavericks 10.9.5.

I am trying to import this complete 3-view of a vintage biplane...

and am only seeing this truncated view.

Note that the two images are actually the same scale on my monitor. Apparently the forum is constricting the larger size of the overall image.

Is there a solution to this problem?

Not being able to trace an image is a deal breaker for me and will force me to look for another CAD soution.

Thanks,

Thayer

Thank You. Worked on my 27" Retina iMac. This is wonderful. Now I can work on the big computer instead of having to work on MacBookPro 13". YIPPEE.

So after a few days of use I am finding that while the new build does allow me to import a jpeg, the snap function is not working for me at all. The biggest annoyance is that it is randomly turning on and off. Despite careful watch of my command sequence, I have not been been able to determine what triggers it to stop working or what makes it kick back in. Whenever I check the Snaps Window, the enable box is checked and they are all toggled on. Cycling the enable box doesn't seem to have any effect.

Please tell me there is a solution for this.

Thanks,

Thayer

i'm not aware of what that would be except I just fixed an issue where groups were ignored for snapping. If you have any more clues please let me know.

Tim,

That does seem to be the issue. When I draw even a simple line I can then snap to its geometry, but if I make it a group it becomes inaccessible. I'm surprised I didn't notice that as the cause.

So, how long do we have to wait until that fix is available?
