I'm new to Viacad Pro v9. But I have experience with Vectorworks as well as SolidWorks. Unfortunateley now that I have retired I can no longer afford either of them.

One of the reasons I bought Viacad was its symbol libraries which promised thousands of 3D symbols. Now I see they are essentially useless for what I want which is a threaded hole in a part and the correspnding fastener.

I have crawled through the forums which tell me to go find 3D models at Macmaster Carr among others. Well, I have tried that but I am not finding any such libraries for download. A little help please.

Hello cfly

McMaster carr has 3d models of fasteners but you have to download each one you need there are no libraries to download a bunch at once.

Yes, I saw that. I suppose I could try that and just download each one that I use.

Thank you

you may want check the following too:

http://www.traceparts.com/
http://www.3dcontentcentral.com/
http://cad.thomasnet.com/

do prefer the SAT format (if available) which is native for ViaCAD (ACIS kernel), otherwise STEP.

I tried all three of those. While the 3D drawings are there they do not show the threads. That's true of almost everywhere I looked.

I have flound a OPENScad script called ISOThread.scad. OPENScad is programmable and Trevor Moseley has writted an scad scipt with produceds finished metric bolts and internal threads. I have the script source. I don't think it will be very difficultt to create one for Imperial threads.

The scad script generates meshes which I was able to convert to a solid by stitching. And the resulting solid correctly forms the external or internal thread when added or subtracted to the object needing threaded holes.

So I saved an internal thread m8-10 as a symbol.

When I use concept explorer to add the symbol, the symbol cannot be added or subtracted from the parent object.

Any suggestions. If I get this to work I will create a symbol library and donate it.

Is the openscad part a polygon mesh or a mathematically precise solid that you are trying to subtract from another part?
