Problem with applying a fill to a group

I have previously made a letter M using straight lines and Grouping in order to fill with black. I am now working on a letter E in which I have 12 straight lines. I Group them and cannot fill with any color. Separately, I can fill four lines grouped as a square as expected. I have worked for a considerable time to make sure each of the 12 lines properly share their two ends with two other lines. I'm lost as to what to try next. Thanks for the help. Lew

Merge the edges together with spline curve; give the square / rectangle a plane with contourplane and activate it click right mouse inside the plane, go to color at your choice. or pull up the plane to a volume body. H.

horst.w , I appreciate your response. Before I received it, I mentally numbered the intersections sequentially from 1 to 12. I then drew a line connecting endpoints 1 to another endpoint such as 3. I then tested the resultant polygon for fill capability. When I got to 1 & 9, it failed. I replaced the line between 8 & 9 and the letter is now filled. It was a bit tedious, but it worked. My experience and education at this point has not encountered the command "contour plane". I will spend some time and try to expand my horizon a bit further. Thank you so much for your help. Lew

I am sorry, but I use the german version -ViaCAD-9 Pro- and the specific english expression for tools are unknown. Or I must search them in Tim's book (highly recommended). Using the rectangle-tool e.g. I can never fill out with color or pull it up to a volume-body without merging the edges and and then I must give this 2D-object a surface before I can do any other action. Grouping is never needed and also not successful; I have tested it. That may be caused by the different versions but most of the examples here or from Tim's book I can reproduce without difficults. Read please my thread in Solid Modeling - wineglass not possible -, at this time some functions of the program where lost by a bad installation and I could not follow the advices I got. H.
