ok, so, i am vcad9pro. i am CAD'ing something like a turbo compressor wheel. i am having a hard time getting my helix to replicate N times around 360 degrees.

so here's my setup

i am in 3d mode
create a 1"dia circle in xy plane z=0, centered at origin
i then create a helix, 1"dia, pitch 4", length 2", centered on z, start at z=0

so now i have my 1st helix and the base of it starts at z=0 and is touching the circle.

now, how to polar replicate the helix line around the z axis 6 times in 360 so that the base of each replicated starts on the circle?

i could do a copy, then move the base 60degrees on circle, and then rotate the helix 60degrees, but this is cumbersome and not easy, and i need to test replication with varying numbers, so the polar replication is ideal.

after i have the helix's i will create a 2d shape that i can extrude along each helix path leaving me with a bunch of 3d helix shapes, i will then use solid subtractions to shape the final OD and ID of the helix "fingers", etc.

caveat: the above allows me to test my cad skills. i'll probably do a path extrusion on the 1st helix, and then will need to polar replicate that 3d helix, etc.

Hi,
Would it be possible to upload your cad file with what you have so far?
A .jpg or sketch of the part would also help.

sure, here's the vcp (helix.vcp)
the planes are different, still the same question though.

helix2 attached, i did rail sweep, but still same issue, i cant polar replicate it. perhaps a polar replicate is not the right way to do it? oddly, i can do it with a cylinder and with twisted extruded square, but once i get to a helix it wont.

UPDATE: ah geez, dunno what i was doing wrong, but now it works just fine.

I'm not clear what you are trying to achieve. If you are trying to make a "turbo compressor wheel" and I google for images of that, the position of your first solid seems to be incorrect. I have attached the result of 6 times your design around the centre of the circle. If you follow the principle, you only have to design the solid in the way you want it.

The way to achieve that is as follows:

1) Select the solid you want to duplicate
2) Press the 'S' button or choose View->Front from the menu bar.
3) Select Polar Duplicate tool
4) In window that opens, enter 6 in the Number field (don't press OK)
5) Click the centre of your circle with a left mouse click
6) Now press OK

There is some variation possible in the above from action 3), but has the same result.

Let us know if this is what you meant.

yeah, its seems to be ok now.
my helix fingers are basically an extruded square that twists/wraps around a cylinder (for every 1degree of wrap the finger twists 1degree, etc. the results are then trimmed using a tube (solid subtraction) so the helix fingers can slip inside a real tube, and, the OD edges of the helix fingers have the same arc profile as the ID of the tube, etc.

here's something i was playing with, i used octagon 2d to extrude the helix fingers, but you get the idea. the application is something like this gas separator
