I have encountered so many problems trying to use text that I am not sure where to start. I am using ViaCAD 9.0.4 1166 which I believe is the latest release on a windows 10 64bit system (the same issues happened with Windows 8.1). The main issues are:

With most of the fonts there are letters that cannot be extruded.
The program crashes when trying to extrude fonts
It reports there are gaps when trying to extrude fonts
Even adding a single letter causes the program to slowdown noticeably
When you try to rotate some letters the program crashes
It will not let you change the font size or type in many cases - when you try to change a font or it's size it changes it back
The font and size fields on the Inspector flash between the current setting and blank

Is there something I am doing wrong? Is there a fix for these issues?

Please help

Thanks,

Randy

>>With most of the fonts there are letters that cannot be extruded.

In order for a character to extrude into a solid, it must close within ACIS tolerances. With Windows we see frequently see issues with fonts where the character glyphs are poorly defined with gaps or overlaps.

Not long ago we added a procedure from ACIS that repairs and heals small gaps in a profile. This helps but it still depends on how well the glyph was designed.

Do you have an example? If you have an example I can jump into the debugger.

You can also see if it is a font design issue by doing a Edit: Change Object type to polylines. You can then see the actual segments in the glyph.

RJS: When I was in the Beta program the fonts were working better but the production release is when I started having more problems. Is this new procedure in the 9.0.4 1166 release?

RJS: What happens is I am working with fonts trying to extrude them or rotate them or something and ViaCAD becomes unresponsive, you can leave it running for hours and it never recovers and has to be shut down from the task manager. If I go to the back up file it it usually works so I am not sure what I could send as an example. it seems more like something is getting corrupted and eventually causes it to get hung or something. Next time it happens I can send you the files.

You can also see if it is a font design issue by doing a Edit: Change Object type to polylines. You can then see the actual segments in the glyph.

RJS: I will give this a try - thanks!

RJS: what about changing the fonts or size of the font?

Thanks!

Tim

I think it came in after 1166. Encore is releasing 1184 this week via the Help : Current Version tool from within the app.

RJS: send you the files.

Ok great. Jumping into the debugging with these types of files really helps track down the issue quickly.

RJS: what about changing the fonts or size of the font?

Change the font type will definitely help. I've tested all the Arial glyphs on Windows for example. Some Windows fonts are designed a bit poorly. Changing the font size will not make a difference.
