hi,

Is there any way to make viacad 3D V8 work under Windows 8.1?
I've got 3 windows 8.1 pc's and tried to run Viacad on them.
The program does launch, but when I try to draw something, all the lines disappear, and other lines and text appears over the screen.
example: https://www.dropbox.com/s/q5dygz...013-11-26%2019.15.57.png

All 3 PC's uses intel graphic cards and I updated all drivers.

I really like your CAD-software, but all my pc's are on win 8.1 :(

kind regards,
Davy

Windows 8.1 Notice

The update causes some incompatibility with released versions of ViaCAD and Shark. If you are unable to launch ViaCAD or Shark under Windows 8.1, please follow the steps below to correct the issue.

From the start screen type computer, or from the desktop click on File explorer
Double click on the C drive to open
For a 64 bit system open Program files (x86) or for a 32 bit system open Program files.
Open the Punch! Software folder
Open the program folder
Open the exe folder
Find and delete the wininet.dll file
Close the computer or File explorer Window
Launch the program as you normally would.

Hi Tim,

I saw This procedure in One of the other posts regarding win 8.1,
But the wininet.dll doesn't exist in the exe folder.
I verified this on my 64-bit windows installation and on my 32-bit installation, but the wininet.dll are not in the exe-folder (Hidden files are visible in my explorer)

Kind regards,
Davy

My Viacad Pro v8 had graphics glitches in Win 8.1. Windows had guessed that it should run in Windows 7 compatibility mode but when I changed it to use no compatibility mode, the glitches disappeared.

I verified that there is no compatibility mode running, and I also tried with several compatibility-modes, but it is still impossible to draw something.

I recorded a video of the behavior of the program:

More or less all common 3D CAx applications are relying on the OpenGL stack for an accelerated output of display transformations (move, rotate, zoom, orbit etc.) processed by the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) of the system.

Therefore the quality of the the display output depends on the OGL support of the used video driver.

Lame, so called 'shared' video solutions as e.g. the intel HD (or previous intel GMA) series built-in in low-end systems and targeted to internet/office purposes do show a slow OGL display output speed (frame rate) during transformations as well as display glitches (e.g. artefacts).

A notebook with a dedicated video subsystem as e.g. the GeForce GTX 7xxM series and their mature OGL support will yield in a much faster and stable OGL display output.

Hi,

I do realize that the Intel HD series is not very powerful,
but in the video above I was just trying to draw 2 circles, and it was impossible to select the correct points for those circles.
When I click the first point of my circle, my original drawing disappears and
other lines I never drew appear on the screen.

I do not think the Intel HD is not powerful enough to do this, as under windows 7 the same Intel HD performs without any problem.
So I suppose it is a problem with the opengl support of the driver.

On the same win 8.1 system I am using Vectric Vcarve to draw things, and the performance is good, but this software perhaps doesn't use opengl.

Kind regards,
Davy

Sometimes it is better to run the programs in compatibility mode. It is recommended that you set compatibility to Windows XP SP3.

Thank you!

I'm downloading them now!
Its difficult to find out on the punchcad website where you can download the latest versions of the software you bought.

I will try them and report back here.

Davy

So I installed ViaCAD 2D/3D V8 SP1 PC ESD and set the compatibility mode to XP SP3.
When I launched the program, I had the same problems again.

Then I remembered there was another user with problems on win8.1 who disabled the compatibility mode, so I tried this again

... and everything seems to be working fine !!!!!!

Thanks for the great support on this forum!
I almost had to switch over to one of those other non-intuitive CAD-programs :o.
This is really the best CAD-program for me.

PS, was the "current version"-button already there in the previous version of the program?
I seem to have overlooked this while searching for an update or upgrade button :D

Kind regards,
Davy Van Peteghem
