I am a custome woodworker, and I do a lot of celtic and viking carvings.
I am offering up a new bed using carved posts with celtic art by my wife. (her work is featured in several video games, and has been used by tattoo artists all over the world)
I first tried using the power pack 10 mesh tool to height map, but I did not like the result. So instead I used freecad 0.16 to import a SVG of my wife's work, then in part design I extruded that into a 3d shape, then converted to a solid, then refined the solid then exported as a STEP file.
Then I imported the STEP file into Viacad 10. Then selected my new imported surface and used the "extrude solid" tool and created a new ACIS solid. Then I deleted the original import and was left with a very nice usable 3d model to be attached to my shop drawings in Viacad.
Yes I know there are probably faster and better ways, but Im a beginner and I only have powerpack 10 not the pro.
I hope maybe this will help you.

Hi jbskaggs, i don´t know which software your wife is using, but if its possible in this app to export ( save ) in Adobe illustrator > file ending .ai > or export as eps, if you have vectorize paths. These formats can directly import to ViaCad and you can directly use it to extrude solids. Height map is the method of choice to convert bitmaps Matthias

That is good to know! Thanks. Like I said Im a beginner :)
IN Ver 10 of viacad on my system EPS is not an option to import. Though the manual says it is.
Since I do not own Adobe Illustrator, I used
https://online-converting.com/vectorize/ to convert my svg to ai.
Then simply imported it to Viacad and extruded and created new solid.
Thanks JB

A couple of videos that might help spark some ideas.
1. BitMap to 3D
--convert bitmap to mesh
--segment mesh
--get outlines
--smooth outlines
https://www.youtube.com/...yVo&feature=youtu.be 2. Adobe Illustrator Paths
--image trace tool
--create paths
--export as DWG
--import into ViaCAD
