Combining B Curves and Lines

Is there a method for combining multiple Bezier curves or lines into a single "group" before I can extrude it.
I know once I see it, it will be obvious, but I don't see how to do it. None of the videos extrude from a complex part (ie a combination ). I have don a Bezier curve that closes on itself in one action, it extrudes fine.
Help and thanks from a newbie :)

Probably not the best way, but it will work.
