Hi - beachballing

Is it just me ?

(I have a modern Mac with 16G memory)

I often have a 20-30 second wait between, well pretty much any action whilst the beachball beachballs

Hide - beachball, draw a line - beachball, turn layer on - beachball

This can't be right, can it ?

So - what's happening when the beachball is beach balling - I understood it was memory attribution / reattribution - is that correct ?

Thanks if anyone can shed a light

Jol

Is it swap space ?

Does the app need more hard disk ?

I don't have a PC but I'm very interested to know whether the same problem exists there

Hi Jol,

Nice to see you back, beach balling after beech carving...
So am I, beach balling on files having links between solid wood and model to plank.
When precise curves are invited on the boat, the beach is close to the wreck.

I told Tim on the nick of time...

>> what's happening when the beachball is beach balling -

Hi Jol

Mac shows a spinning beach ball when the app does not respond to pending events after 2-4 seconds.

Some things I've seen where the app may not be responding to events (i.e. mouse updated to new location) are...

1. App is crunching on some calculations and intentionally ignoring events for performance...

Shells, blends, booleans, file read/write, display lists updates, selections, repaints, etc all intentionally ignore events in ViaCAD/Shark.

2. You're out of RAM and system is using disk space for temp memory/swap space. Check activity monitor App Memory used. 16GB should be enough.

3. You're running out of disk space used for temp/scratch space (I try to keep around 20GB free)

4. Something is wrong with your disk, check using disk utility. I typically run disk utility every other week (usually to correct permissions) booted from another os image.

Maybe it's recalculating the display list for silhouettes. Does it do it in wireframe or just render modes?

Maybe double check autosave settings. Those operations might trigger a file save.

Also check your logicursor settings (turn off does it happen). Maybe its doing some calculations every mouse move.

Thanks Tim

I think I underestimate the data I'm dealing with - files often get up to 60-80 Mb

Imported step files of parts and my own generated parts soon add up

I think I need to get better at managing the data - throwing stuff away (instead of keeping it - just in case)

(or learning to use x-refs which I understand is now possible)

60-80 MB should be fine with your config. I was testing 1.1GB files before the release for performance issues like selecting and repainting. Something's not right if drawing a line is causing a spinning cursor.

Are any of the parts showing up as Red in concept explorer? Maybe a bad part is causing a display list recalculation.

If you send the file, I'll see if it is repeating on this end.
