Hello,
I have been using ViaCAD pro v9 (1195) with powerpack and missed below Blog entry... just upgraded to High Sierra & broke my beloved ViaCAD:
"Apple recently released Mac OS 10.13 High Sierra. ... The new OS unfortunately broke some of the event handling in ViaCAD and Shark. The V10 service pack corrects this issue. Be sure to get the ViaCAD/Shark update before updating your OS. If you updated the OS before updating ViaCAD/Shark, contact Encore technical support for direct download links. Unfortunately, earlier versions including V9 no longer work with the new OS. You will need to either upgrade to V10 or hold off updating to Mac OS 10.13."
Is there an upgrade path / discount to v10? My serial number is not recognized by the ViaCAD v10 page . What happens with the power pack then? Thanks+kind regards,
guido

Hello To use with High Sierra you would need to run V10 of the ViaCAD. Regards Jason

This is really rather poor - forced to upgrade.. Might have to go and give SketchUp a try...

The "forced upgrade" is a result of the MAC update to their coding in High Sierra. It rendering the coding in V9, and in the initial release of V10 for that fact, incompatible. While a patch to V9 was impossible, the developers where able to work with V10 coding to make it compatible with High Sierra. Because of this, upgrading to V10 is the only option to run on High Sierra. To upgrade you can contact me at 800-856-9601. I am available Monday-Friday between the hours of 8AM-5PM CST. I would be happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have and assist you with upgrading.

Thanks for the Reply Todd. The issue is that for a casual user such as myself (ie i use ViaCad for personal design stuff every now and then - not commercial) getting less than 4 years of use from software that cost $249 hurts a bit. Then having to upgrade at another $149 hurts a bit more. I appreciate that it wasn't your fault it broke - but i'd expect a longer runway on support than the time I got. On average commercial software is usually in support for 6-8 years, given how long PunchCad (and its predecessors and derivatives) have been going I would have expected better support. How many years can i expect the V10 upgrade to work for?

The ViaCAD license is perpetual. I have ViaCAD 5 still running on an older Mac. However, it will not work forever if you change to hardware or an operating system that is beyond the original design scope. I think Encore mentions this on their website. I think Apple has another one coming where they announced they will no longer support 32 bit apps in 10.13.4 ("not optimized for Mac"). Over the years, we've experienced this from both Apple and Microsoft breaking older software.
Regarding updates, Encore provides free service packs throughout the major version. For example, as a V10 user, you will get free service packs until V11 is released.
>>getting less than 4 years of use
If anyone just purchased ViaCAD 9 Mac from a retail store with old inventory, you can contact customer service and see if you qualify for a free upgrade.
