So at a more affordable level, is MoI able to do what some folks are looking for, as shown in this post on their forum?

Polycad.....it does what freeform surface-editing apps should do. As well as building boat hulls parametrically.

We've nearly had something interesting here for many years. Tim keeps on edging us closer, but to use this kind of push-pull putty modelling, we need to be able to define our startpoint !!

Mac beta 962 Shark FX, I have tried to imitate Tim's image in organic modeling and when I try to make the wings it tries to pull every thing to one side. It does not do it symmetrically as it did in Tim's example. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Jol,
when creating surfaces you are right. But we have something like that already. You can create a net surface from control point splines. Put u and v control points over each other and you can control the number of points and ribs the surface follows.
(In many cases we cant create all surfaces like this. And so it would be nice to be able to change the degree or the representation of the face to be able to modify a given face from a different operation with proper selection tools like point/ribs, etc -e.g. changing tension on a radius or add some camber to flat surfaces afterwards.)

Got your point Albano Just sayin' ... ... there's an opportunity here to be grasped and it requires Tim to supply us with the raw materials for putty modelling : a plane, a cube and a sphere ... where you can define the number of CVs per surface : be it 3x3, 7x3, 12x10 or whatever

Right!
But why start with primitives? As these are represented internally in ACIS as surfaces we could build our own primitives! Imagine building a car from cubes like my little son would. Only defining edges with that and cambering and streamlining the faces then.... all with an interface we like Tims software for!

Sure Albano - I'm totally with you - I guess my thoughts were based on my experience with Maya putty modelling where you define a primitive and push/pull from there. Tim's Gripper makes most of what Maya does in this regard available today In the near term, I'd be delighted with a CV / hull definable single plane as my starting point. Things could develop on from there

MAC Shark FX 7 (963) When I try to duplicate Tim's example in organic modeling It will not come out symmetrically. When I pick out the points it does not seem that they symmetrical to begin with. When I draw the initial ellipsoid, in isometric and then zoom in on the left and right sides, one side has many more points than its opposite side. Also they do not appear to be symmetric.

yes true - what's needed to model successfully using this method is a definable starting point

Rhino has done this since, well, 1998. It can also be called direct modeling in some circles, or local deformations, point modeling (NURBS) etc. Its much more helpful to have a grid showing both directions (M and N) along a surface, at least in Rhino it is. I also have some suggestions to improve both the GUI and improve workflow.

Here's a novel way of making a [URL="http://moi3d.com/forum/index.php?webtag=MOI&msg=5470.1"]complex surface[/URL] that shows the value of Jol's and others comments about control points etc. Sorry to keep posting links to the MoI forum, but I'd like ViaCAD to have some of its nicer features, that I think would be of real value to us.
