Dimension hole positions model to sheet (#5010)

After selecting model to sheet I can dimension the 2D drawings both vertically and horizontally but the cursor will not snap to hole centres so I cannot dimension the hole locations. I have the snaps set to enable centre. Help please what am i missing?

Can you post a file? Maybe the circle is a polyline.

What type of holes are they created with hole tool or are they cutouts? You can try changing the edge selection from polyline to flat shade to have hole center snaps show up as a work around. Regards Jason

It's not just one drawing that doesn't work. As a test I have stared a new drawing. I draw a square with a circle inside and extruded it. I select model to sheet and the drawing appears with the 4 views. I select the top view and can dimension vertically and horizontally but the cursor won't snap to the centre of the circle although it will allow me to use the diameter out tool.

i bore hole in a cube. on sheet i can use Smart Dimension on the center of the hole, but the Center Mark Dimension will not select the center of the hole. my Vertical and Horizontal tools do select the Center and Vertex of the hole. Win7 64bit, 32bit Pro v9 build 1104.

Cannot get center or vertex in draw views that have edge properties set as "polyline" in any version of program. Snap points center available if you change to other edge settings like "flat" or other shaded for ViaCAD, or if you have Shark "precise lines" setting give you these snap points
can add centermark dim to get vertex to snap to as well
Regards
Jason

Ah yes, I can dimension using flat instead of polyline but the result is a solid object and does't give me the engineering drawing I was looking to produce. I was hoping to create a 3D model and then produce a 2D dimensioned engineering drawing but it looks like I may not be able to get this with Viacad 2D 3D v8.

David You can change view back to polylines after you finish dimensioning the holes Regard Jason

Thanks Jason that works, I didn't know that could be done. I have also discovered this: select the Flat option instead of poylines and then click the small red box top left on the view you want, chose properties and then switch back to polylines, uncheck 2D objects in view and check Hole centre lines. Now its possible to snap to the hole centres in poyline view which is what I wanted, great. Just one more thing, the polyline view also shows the lines made where the 3D object was modified with blend , is there a way to hide them so they won't print on the finished plan sheet.

David
Which lines are you referring to? Can you post a pic of example?

The lines are the ones indicated in red. I feel I am missing something and there is a way to remove them before I get to this stage. It's where blend was used.

They're tangency lines. Choose "ignore" for tangency in MtS settings. Eliminating them can make drawings a bit ambiguous, though, so there are other settings like phantom and hidden that make them less prominent, but still discernable.

ViaCAD does not have an option to change tangency lines in the model to sheet settings like Shark has. Regards Jason

Not a global setting in VC, but it can be toggled in each viewport's properties. *edit* my mistake, the viewport property setting isn't responsive, looks like they'd have to be deleted manually.

Thank you all for your help. I can delete the lines manually as suggested and get the result I want.

This bug has been around for a long time but, as others have pointed out, you can right click the view and change the properties to flat view then put a vertex point at the center of your hole. Then switch back to "polylines" and the vertex will still be there. Regarding "diameter out" not working, I think this happens mostly with circles that are on a rounded face which seems to confuse ViaCad but it can also happen sometimes randomly. My work-around for this problem is to used the "center point circle" tool and draw a circle from the vertex to an end point on the hole that I want the "diameter out" tool to work on then dimension that circle with the diameter out tool. You have to leave that circle there or the dimension will get deleted and the update-views mode will not update your circle if you change the associated hole size but this is the best I can come up with. Hope this gets fixed in newer versions. I am running Windows V12.

Not only holes, but most rounded corners (blends) don't take a radius dimension out.
I use the same workaround, drawing a 3 points arc on top...

I think simplify curves helps this in the properties box. Also, use the smart dimension. Seems like 1 version of Viacad you want simplify curves checked. But another unchecked.i use it all the time.
