Hello,

i start to look for an otherwise CAD Programm.
I'm using punchCad since ViaCad 5.
I love this software.
But in the moment I will not buy the update from SharkCad 16, what I'm using now.
Mac Os 28 will come sooner or later and here is no information, if punchCad will or can offer a version for running on apple 28.

So I keep at least one Computer on the System now.
Only for SharkCad . it is funny or makes no sense?

How do you think about?
Have you any idea, how to handle this?
best wishes

Andreas

That's what I do, but it's a pain in the neck for my workflow.

I have been using Autodesk Fusion more lately. Actually motivated by the render module which is not too bad with texturing. I set up a quick render and feed the result to Gemini or Chatgpt for realism. I also found that using Fusion in direct modeling mode I can use it more like Shark, easier to copy paste between files. The sketching is a pain but it’s actually the timeline that ruins my workflow. I have been subscribing for a long time and my price is locked in at 310 dollars per year so it’s a keeper.

In the background, I use Moi v5, formZ Free, and FreeCAD, and I’m trying to get the hang of Blender. Unfortunately, though, SharkCAD is the CAD program that’s really close to my heart. I haven't quite warmed up to Fusion yet. I guess I'll have to give it a try now, though. :-)
best wishes

been using Shark/ViaCad since the tail end of concepts unlimited including turbocad and ashlar cobalt / graphite, but i too keep returning to shark. outside of this ecosystem i use rhino, solidworks, autocad 2d/3d, microvellum and they each have their own advantage but shark feels like home.

i recently discovered solidworks xdesigner and its not bad. you get SW lite basically for <USD50 / year.

i've tried formZ free and above over the years, but its so buggy and i am not convinced they are doing much by way development nor promotion since their founder retired about a decade ago. i could be wrong though.

reasons i dislike rhino, while its a very powerful 2d/3d cad tool for its price, its kind of clunky and seems geared towards conceptualization rather than design-engineering. also it is a nurbs and subd modeler not solid. i am only interested in solid modelers epsecially parametric / history based.

i should mention im in a mac environment so im very much limited.

I'm sur, i will keep at least one Mac only to run SharkCad 16
as I wrote, I try always other software, but Shark is my favorite.
It is similar as I used an old Mac OS 9 to run my milling software Mac CN and Maquette Volume.
best wishes

Hi Andreas

I found this the other day, it looks super interesting, https://youtu.be/_eQES4ErBXw?is=P01ZvfWNsfp8TCdb

It’s a one man development, and you can test it here… https://github.com/QymIs-Tech/QymCAD
It uses the OPENCASCADE kernel, same as FreeCAD

All the best
Mike

PS On macOS it only works on Apple Silicon

ohhh,

maybe punch starts to rebuild viaCad and shark with KI
like:
https://getartcraft.com/apps
so it will run on the next MacosX.
best wishes

ChatGPt Research about when is the end of support of AMD64 Software on Mac:
Quote:
Apple officially confirms the end of Rosetta support for Intel (AMD64/x86_64) Mac applications

The decisive change will occur with macOS 28, expected in 2027.

Apple officially confirmed this on September 1, 2026. macOS 27 is the final release providing general-purpose Rosetta support for Intel-only applications on Apple Silicon Macs.

Official Apple announcement:
Apple Developer — Upcoming changes to Rosetta support (September 1, 2026)

Official compatibility timeline

 • macOS 26 Tahoe (2025): Intel-only Mac applications can run on Apple Silicon through Rosetta. This is also the final major macOS version supporting Intel-based Macs.
 • macOS 27 Golden Gate (released September 14, 2026): The last macOS version supporting general-purpose Rosetta translation for Intel Mac applications.
 • macOS 28 (expected in 2027): Regular Intel-only Mac applications will no longer run through Apple's Rosetta translation layer on Apple Silicon. Apple has not announced an exact release date.

One limited exception
Apple will retain a subset of Rosetta functionality for certain older, unmaintained games that depend on Intel-based frameworks. There is no announced general exception for CAD, engineering, graphics or productivity software.

Official technical documentation:
Apple Support — Using Intel-based apps on a Mac with Apple silicon

What does this mean for SharkCAD and ViaCAD?

Punch! Software released SharkCAD 17 and ViaCAD 17 for macOS and Windows on July 16, 2026.

The manufacturer's website currently describes these products as native on Apple Silicon and Intel. However, the detailed SharkCAD 17 system requirements list support for Apple Silicon without explicitly documenting the application's binary architecture. Moreover, users in the PunchCAD forum have reported that ViaCAD 17 still requires Rosetta, while other users report that SharkCAD and ViaCAD versions continue to work on macOS 27.

These conflicting statements should not be treated as proof that every current SharkCAD or ViaCAD component runs natively on ARM64. Native compatibility needs to be verified for the actual installed version, including any plug-ins and extensions.

PunchCAD — Official Mac product page
PunchCAD — SharkCAD 17 for Mac, system requirements

How to verify whether your application is affected

 • Locate the application in Finder.
 • Select it and press Command-I (Get Info).
 • Check the Kind field.
 • Application (Intel): Requires Rosetta on an Apple Silicon Mac and will be affected by the macOS 28 change.
 • Application (Universal): Contains both Intel and Apple Silicon code, although individual Intel-only plug-ins may still be affected.
 • Application (Apple silicon): Runs natively without Rosetta.

On macOS 27, installed Intel applications can also be identified under System Settings > General > About > Intel-based Apps.

Important distinction
This announcement concerns Intel/x86_64 macOS applications running on Apple Silicon through Rosetta. Windows AMD64 executables (.exe) are a separate matter and are not directly supported by Rosetta.

Existing Intel Macs will not suddenly stop running compatible Intel software. They can continue using supported older macOS versions, subject to future security and application compatibility limitations.

Conclusion
macOS 28 is the critical compatibility boundary for Intel-only CAD software on Apple Silicon Macs. If an application still depends on Rosetta, it will need a native ARM64 version to remain directly usable on macOS 28 and later.

For professional CAD workflows, users should verify the actual architecture of SharkCAD or ViaCAD before upgrading macOS and request explicit confirmation from PunchCAD regarding native ARM64 support.
