Un-snappy cone points (#4966)

New to ViaCad and new to this forum. So...stooopid question time. On ViaCAD 8 and 9... Why, when I have two rounded cones (dia. 2 height 2) standing next to each other zero grounded on the global grid, can I not get a vertex or anything on the cone points? Say I just want to draw a line between the two cone points...I can't seem to do it directly. I have to draw a line between the two centers of the cone bases and then elevate it +2 in Z in a separate move operation. What am I missing? One of the things that made me pick ViaCAD was all the fancy-schmancy snapping and intelligent cursor stuff, but it seems to ignore certain parts of certain shapes. What am I doing wrong?

Hi, away from home so not in front of my ViaCAD. You should look for a snap options palette in the Window menu. Play with the options, you should be able to do what you want. Regards, Nicolas

Thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately, while it does seem like that SHOULD work, it doesn't. Still stuck.

hi,
try to use the "cone two points" tool to construct your cones. then you should be able to snap to the vertex points

Steve. Post the file that you're having difficulty with. That way we can check it out for ourselves. Martin.

Interesting. Quite right, rokoko, that DOES make the pointy end of the cone "vertex"-able.
Nice to have an answer that does work. I would consider it a workaround though, wouldn't you? Wouldn't you consider it a bug that some bits of a cone are, effectively, unselectable depending on what primitive option you used to make them? Or is this considered "normal"? I'm new, so I'm still in the attitude adjustment phase in terms of expectations.
But once again, thanks for the tip. Your answer DOES make a difference. Works exactly as expected.

Of course. Thanks for taking the time to do that.

I'd say that's a bug :) Tim - if you're reading this... Only the Cone Two Points tool creates a cone with a snapable vertex. Martin.

blowlamp: According to Todd, cones are SUPPOSED to work this way. It isn't a bug. Depending on how they're created, the points won't be selectable. Go figure. Sure didn't read THAT anywhere I can remember. Oh, well.

>>According to Todd, cones are SUPPOSED to work this way. It isn't a bug. >>Depending on how they're created, the points won't be selectable. Yes that is way it is implemented. In the case of primitives, it only snaps to the points you used to create it plus the base center point. I will look at adding the tip as a snap point for 1108. Tim
