Could Not Save Data File (#4186)

Is this a common problem with Viacad v8(984)? I have been experiencing this problem since I started using viacad v8 (upgrade from v6). I have seen posts on this forum suggesting that the cause could be memory issues, corrupt files, etc., but no confirmation of what actually causes this problem. Is this unique to a few viacad v8 users or all users? Is this a known bug (with a planned fix) or a problem that hasn't or can't be replicated in Punch Labs?

Happens to me all the time, so often (as well as crashes) that I have the auto backup running always, which is a life saver, and also very helpful if you change the design and need to go back to prior versions you forgot to save. Mac OS

PRP, Can you tell what set of commands in Viacad v8, the size of your v8 file, # of v8 files open at the time or conditions in your operating environment (browser on, amount of tabs open, e-mail on, amount of RAM available, etc.) are present when it happens to you? For me, I am just either extruding parts or using general solids (cubes, etc.). My files tend to be over 25MB when it starts to happen, but only for files that were originally created in v6. I only keep on v8 file open at a time. I only use v8 and close all other programs that would be running (e-mail, browser, IM, etc.) One typical thing I notice is that the amount of ram used (about 40% of my 8GB) is typically in use when the error shows up. Sometimes its a bit lower (~37% but never lower than that), but that is about the only constant. I don't use the autosave command, but because it happens so often with these files over 25MB, I save after every 5 mouseclicks. Thanks for the confirmation. I would imagine that we are not the only ones, but hopefully there is a fix on the way.

Add me to the list.... seems to be a "feature" I've given up on Viacad for awhile... I'm having more success with google sketchup lately. I sure hope there is a fix soon, as I do like the software... but its frustrating as hell, when you get so far into a project and it crashes, or you can't save.

If anyone has some steps to repeat, that would be great in tracking down. Tim

Take a large complex model and copy everything on the screen to another location and save. Keep repeating and it will happen.

David, Thanks for noticing that. I took a 40 MB file that I wasn't having any problems with, copied everything in the file one time to another place in the file and bingo, it happened!!

Add me on the list too.
It's the first time I get it, with SFX b1002.
Save Fails.
Save as Fails.
Export all layers to SFX V8 fails.
Export all layers to SFX V7SP1 fails.
.................................
Export all layers to SFX V7 WORKS !.
After importing it back in V8SP1, I can modify and save.
Tim, does it ring a bell ?

Hi all, I have got the same problem on Shark V8 - 1013 this morning. I work on a file of 105 Mo, and I didn't have solution to save it. I tried to export in V7/V5 without success because I have a problem with the boolean's substraction. I can reopen the file but all the volumes which used to make the substraction disappeared. In the past I worked on larger files (130 Mo) in Shark V5 and haven't problem why the V8 version doesn't work ? Best regards,

If your reading this, try: Edit > Select All Edit > Copy File > New Put in new File name and click save Edit > Paste File > Save As and put in new file name. So all your work is saved under a new file name. Work for me. Mark S
