I have Shark FX7 at home for hobby, and ViaCad at the company I work for (latter just for occasional drawing). So why isn't it possible to export to ViaCaAD? Or is there a good workaround?

can't you just change the file suffix ?

I'm sure there's an easy answer to this one

I think you can. Isn't it just a matter of selecting the correct option in the Export menu (to ViaCAD v6, perhaps)?

Martin.

I don't know if this applies to ViaCAD/Shark, but some other applications don't export to older or lesser versions simply because newer and more upscale versions have more features that the other versions can't recognize or do anything with.

Take SolidWorks for example - this is part of the reason files created in newer versions of SolidWorks can't be opened in older versions. Older versions lack the features and capabilities of their newer versions.

Of course, SolidWorks also does this to force their customers into making costly upgrades every year as well.

Hi

You can just open the files in each program only if they are of the same version or older so that's were you can use export to version you need

Viacad /shark opens all files from the punchcad line.

While you don't get the history tree, an ACIS solid does carry some feature recognition if you exchange with other .sat programs, not only Punch. A lot more useful than dxfs and igs of old.

Opening .sfx in ViaCad was no problem, stupid of me not to try first. I was blindly thinking of the export formats. Thanks

True, but maybe it SHOULD be in the list - cos it's not obvious that data from the sister app can be imported

Better yet, have both Shark and ViaCAD use the same suffix, rather than one that is artificially created by some marketing person who probably never uses the software.

I agree with Nick, as I have deliberately refrained from trying to open *.sfx files in the past with ViaCad, because I just assumed that they would not open. Apparently this is not true, is that right?

Ian,
correct.

In the past I have shared Shark files with clients that use a free version of ViaCAD as a viewer. Everything works fine as long as both Shark and ViaCAD are using the same version of the ASICS kernel. The current situation of having Shark and ViaCAD at 5, 6 and 7 makes things very confusing and definitely reduces interoperability.
